“John Servati died a hero,” fellow swimmer Anna Rae Gwarjanski Tweeted Tuesday. “Held up a concrete wall long enough for his girlfriend to get out from under it before it collapsed again on him.”
Almost 30 years ago while working in my brother-in-law’s new home with doing the electrical wiring, I had a bunch of sheetrock fall over on me (15-16 sheets of 4X12 5/8”) that crushed both my legs. It was propped up against the wall where I had to get to an outlet to pull wire and my BIL and another guy were tilting it back. BIL pulled too hard and the stuff fell over trapping me.
Over 1000 pounds fell on both my legs. My feet were mangled and my right knee was torn out inside (ACL completely trashed). Had it not been for the steel supported workboots, my feet would be confetti.
I shudder to think about what this man went through in those few moments. Every so often, that one or two seconds plays over and over in my mind like a two hour movie.
