Netanyahu 'Asked Rabbi to Allow Giving David's Tomb to Vatican'
Israel National News ^ | 5/1/2014 | Hezki Ezra, Gil Ronen

A Knesset Member said Thursday that Chief Sephardic Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef told him that the Prime Minister's bureau contacted him and asked to grant halakhic permission for Israel to hand over the Tomb of David to the Vatican.

The startling news was revealed by the Knesset Member during a tour of the Tomb of Daid by four MKs – Yoni Chetboun of the Jewish Home, who initiated the tour, Moshe Feiglin (Likud-Beytenu), Nissim Ze'ev (Shas), and Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism – UTJ).

The MKs were unanimous in declaring that they intend to do everything within their power to forestall any attempt to hand over the Tomb to the Vatican. There are also reports that not just the Tomb, but the entire Mount Zion compound is up for transfer. The MKs made clear that the zone is under Israeli sovereignty and will remain so.

There have been reports, recently, of a secret negotiation channel between the Vatican and the Israeli government, regarding the Tomb – and especially its second floor, which the Vatican calls the “Room of the Last Supper” – and the Mount Zion compound.

What makes this really confusing is that the site was apparently not viewed as David's Tomb until the 12th century. According to Benjamin of Tudela, writing about 1173, the tomb was discovered during repairs to a church.

I don't remember where I read it, but it is my understanding that David's Tomb was known during the times of Jesus. If so, it is hard to imagine celebrating the Last Supper "upstairs" from a tomb, it would have made them ceremonially unclean, wouldn't it?

Either way, I oppose giving the Vatican control over any part of Jerusalem. Israel allows freedom of worship, there is no need to give up sovereignty over any piece of land.

My first thought on why Bibi would consider this is that the Tomb would be in a more secure environment than Israel were it stored at the Vatican. Israel may be expecting to go to war soon. Maybe with Iran. Any high level warlike aggression from Israel will be sent back to them by multiple enemy sources, hopefully, not all at once.

Israel would be CRAZY to give up anything to the Vatican.

....

...unless this is part of God’s sovereign will where Israel does something stupid in order to show in the End TImes that God is all-powerful (wouldn’t be the first time that has happened).

Isn’t Netanyahu’s son engaged to a Christian?

If the temple mount were to go to Vatican hands, then the Vatican could be brought in during the tribulation to build the third temple. Who knows what Yahweh is doing, but HE IS DOING…..many things.

Stored at the Vatican? With the Menorah and the other Temple vessels?

I seriously doubt the Israeli Jews will stand by while the Vatican takes away King David's Tomb!

There are rumors are that the Vatican does indeed have the original Menorah that Titus took as booty back to Rome. Said to be in pristine condition too.

Israel is nuts for allowing the Vatican any property or deed to their land.

I too think Bibi is trying to protect the tomb. Less chance of it being attacked by Muzzies if it is owned by the Vatican than the Jews.

"There are rumors are that the Vatican does indeed have the original Menorah that Titus took as booty back to Rome. Said to be in pristine condition too."

Seems unlikely, considering how many chances there were for it to be taken elsewhere after Rome was sacked by Vandals.

Still, the Vatican does have underground storage said to be square miles in size, so who knows.

The gentiles are to trample Jerusalem... I could see where Israel would seek to secure sacred items and yes, even with the Vatican.

The Vandals may have taken the items from Jerusalem to Carthage in 455. If so, they probably ended up in Constantinople when Justinian’s army conquered the Vandal kingdom. Whether they were there in 1204, I don’t know—perhaps some Crusader made off with it when Constantinople was captured in the Fourth Crusade. Or the Venetians could have grabbed it.

What prophetic significance would this have if it’s true?

The End Times should be right around the corner IMHO.

Me too. Why? Who can secure the AO better, the Swiss guard, or the IDF?

Rome will undoubtedly be a much safer location than Israel in the near future. In the long term, however, thats a much less certain proposition.

Interesting. I read the article with the perspective that David's tomb would still be in Israel, just under Vatican control.

Maybe I'm mistaken?
