Another major derailment of a train carrying oil through a town in the U.S. has caused the evacuation of 300 people, with oil washing into the James River in Virginia, which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay.

For all of Obama’s concern for the poor and minorities he sure doesn’t care about those living beside the tracks in Detroit either. Bakken oil rolls through some very heavily populated areas of Detroit on its way to Windsor.
The GOP needs to get on the ball and start warning those people of the danger Obama is putting them in

I don’t think its about the GOP not caring because they certainly care more than Obama. I think they’re too afraid and too stupid to know how to reach out to the poor and encourage them to speak out on this sort of thing.

Here goes another “Blame the Bakken” rant. Actually, the oil fire in Casselton, ND was caused by a derailed grain car(s) that were laid over onto the oncoming tracks with the oil train. Rail road fault. The derailment and subsequent fire in Quebec was caused by rail road workers failing to set brakes and block the wheels of the train when they left it unattended. Rail Road fault. What ever caused the Virginia wreck, it was not the oil cargo but we won’t blame the Rail Road, not with Obama mega contributor Warren Buffett involved.
It’s not the method of transport that the left opposes,
it’s the peasantry enjoying the use of an energy source that they oppose.

Put in Keystone it robs his buddy of money spent on those rail routes.
I don’t buy that argument about Buffet.
Coal trains bring in about $100k profit after everything is paid for and Obama is killing the coal industry.
If Buffet was trying make some money and had the ability to influence Obama he would be running more coal trains not less coal trains as we run now compared to a year ago.
There is profit in any way you move the commodities, so if the pipeline was built, it can only handle so much, there would still be profit in running oil by rail and it would still be running by rail.
By the way that graphic at the top of this thread is a bit off. Try 10,000 ton trains. 100 tons an average for a single loaded car. 100+ cars in a oil or coal train, you get over 10,000 tons.
I live about nine miles from downtown Lynchburg, where this derailment occurred. I heard some distant sirens/alarms go off at the time, but I didn't know what was going on.
An eyewitness saw the ground give way beneath a portion of the track just before the accident happened. He says he believes that was due to the days and days of torrential rain we've had lately. I'd say that's a fair working theory.
Sorry, but this is a fundamental inaccuracy.
Keystone would move Tar Sands crude from Canada to refineries in the US. What it won't move is the light, sweet crude from the Williston Basin (Bakken oilfields) to the east coast, the west coast, or any place the pipeline doesn't go. It was not intended to handle the 900,000 barrels of oil a day being produced (and increasing) from the Bakken and Three Forks formations.
That oil is being shipped to refineries all over the country, and rail is the next best way to get it there, short of a pipeline.
Rail cars can be loaded today, sent out to a variety of destinations, and are far safer and more economical than truck transport.
Pipelines take time and only go where the pipe is.
These are transportation issues, and those issues should be addresssed, but it isn't the oil's fault. If the railroad roadbed was soft and gave way, maybe the railroad needs to examine potential sloughing and collapse hazards along its rights of way and take measures which would prevent track failures.
One more gripe. The oil didn't just 'explode', the train was wrecked first. The headline makes it sound as if the train was just sitting on the tracks and blew up.
That's a brain bender for the headline skimming set.
