On Wednesday, a video appeared on Youtube of a Hammond, Ind. police officer seemingly abusing his department’s dog.

The officer’s actions were caught on video from inside a second floor window. The officer can be seen repeatedly lifting the dog into the air by his collar.

He then proceeds to whip the dog with his leash.

As the news of and outrage over the officer’s mistreatment of the dog spread, the video went viral.

Amongst those who came to hear of the officer’s actions was Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., who took immediate action in criticizing the officer.

“Anybody who loves dogs as much as I do is always saddened and shocked anytime you hear of a dog’s abuse,” McDermott said in a statement.

“When you find out it happened with an employee of yours, it makes it that much more shocking and disturbing,” McDermott continued. “Please know that the Hammond PD does not condone that type of behavior of any of its officers, nor is it tolerated in this administration.”

Sticking true to his word, McDermott placed the officer on administrative leave, effective immediately. Further investigation is pending.

The Mayor also stated that the dog will be removed from the officer’s control as investigations continue.

I will never have much empathy for people who send dogs into places they won’t go themselves. Then again I’ve lived a long time and the more I know about most people the better I like my dogs.

Since police K9’s are considered “police officers”, wouldn’t this be considered assault on a police officer?

The cop must have left his bullets at home. On a more positive note, the mayor is coming down hard on the cop by giving him a paid vacation (known to our government overlords as “administrative leave”).

Cops sure have it rough.

Not as uncommon as one would think, it the 80’s we adopted an abused K9 German Sheppard. He was very distrustful of men, we showered him with love and slowly he trusted. He was a great dog. Mr. Munchie RIP.

I think a lot of the issue stems from the extremely aggressive tone cops use. Dogs react poorly to people acting aggressively towards their owners. When I was a kid, the PSE&G guy came to read our meter. Only my sisters and I (my oldest sister was maybe 14) we're home, along with our dog. The dog was barking at the meter man, but keeping her distance. He then yelled at my sister to shut the dog up, or control it, or whatever. Bam! In an instant, the dog ran over and bit him.

Look and listen to how cops talk to people (being as they are, increasingly militant and aggressive), and it is no surprise that they frequently feel "threatened" by the dogs. It is actually the cops who are typically threatening.

Assault? Wasn’t that dog wagging its tail during the video?

This is the reason cops hate being videoed.

What did the dog do wrong, fail to alert for drugs on a secret hand signal command?

...........only after he is raised up similarly and had his ass whipped with the same whip!

..........a lot of our cop cases on FR are close calls, but there is NOTHING that is a close call on this. This quy should be fired immediately and apply for a job driving a concrete truck after he is prosecuted and spends some jail time.

NO, I take that back (the concrete truck) . That’s too much responsibility. Give him a shovel and a ditch!

Update:

So, after waiting for local outrage to die down, the expected Official Pardon was given:

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Hammond-Police-Determine-K-9-Officer-Didnt-Abuse-Dog-259828851.html

“We do not feel in this case that the dog was abused in any way,” Vohne Liche Kennels said in a statement. “The handler’s technique was not the way he was taught but was not abuse.”

Dogs wag their tails at the people who are abusing them as an appeasement gesture.

In dog body language, another ~dog~ would clearly see that and calm down/stop the attack.

Humans are not as bright.

The dogs was being cruelly treated.

If I did that my Dobes and they bit the hell out of me, I would have -earned- those bites fairly.
