Christians Slam Palin Over Waterboarding Baptism Comment

ormer Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has come under fire from Catholics and other Christians over her "blasphemous" and "sacrilegious" comments comparing waterboarding to baptism.

The 2008 Republican candidate for vice president said at a National Rifle Association convention in Indianapolis over the weekend that if she were in charge, "waterboarding is how we'd baptize terrorists."

Edward Peters, a professor on canon law at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, attacked Palin in his blog, "In the Light of the Law," saying that even if "her words only meet the lesser standard of 'irreverence' toward God or holy things, they were wrong to utter and wrong to applaud."

He continued, "Whether one is a left-wing looney who becomes unhinged upon simply seeing this woman who loves her family and her country or is a right-wing yahoo who looks on her as some sort of high priestess of traditional values, Sarah Palin's statement … should shock the conscience.

"I think Palin's guardian angel wept at her comparing baptism to waterboarding."

Deacon Ed Kandra, of the Brooklyn diocese in New York, pointed out on the website Patheos that "equating torture with baptism is extremely offensive — and, in fact, blasphemous."

Kandra said that waterboarding "degrades human life" and that Palin "made a mockery of the foundational sacrament of our faith."

He wrote, "As someone who calls herself 'pro-life,' she should understand that we are called to respect life in all its forms, at all times, from conception to natural death. Pro-life Americans should be appalled."

Webster's second definition of baptism:

"an act, experience, or ordeal by which one is purified, sanctified, initiated, or named.

Sarah would initiate the terrorists into US custody by waterboarding. Or however she worded her exact sentences.

This feeding frenzy is a pathetic and ignorant response to what she said.

Not just liberals are offended. Also offended are people who think Baptism is a sacred thing, instituted by and dedicated to You-Know-Who, and don't like to see it profaned--- and it's even worse if Palin thinks the nexus between "baptism" and "torture" is, as her defenders say, "just a joke."

Look, neither Ed Peters nor Deacon Kandra (quoted) are liberals, and as for myself, you may judge as you wish, but the only reason I voted in the 2008 election at all, was to cast my ballot for Sarah Palin and hope for something to providentially knock out McCain. (No a death-wish. Just benign like, say, something to do with his larynx.)

Of course I'll allow her a foot-fault. But if she's smart, she won't do it again.

Remember, HUMOR is under assault. The PC crowd (who have no sense of humor), want to make all humor offensive to someone so that “jokes” will no longer be tolerated.

Crazy you say? Oh, crazy like we would elect a gay (bi-sexual) Muslim, Marxist, born in Kenya, American hating, incompetent as president?

I am a Christian (In The Ministry), and I am not offended by what she said.

The word “Baptize’ comes from the Greek word to “immerse”. It would probably have been more “offensive” if Sarah had used the word “Christened”, but we do that to ships...with champagne, no less!

It is probably TOO strong a word for Waterboarding, since complete immersion is not even employed in the process.

No, just liberals are offended. Whether or not they claim Christianity is besides the point. Some of them may wish to remember the crusaders, Jesus flipping tables in the temple, David and a host of other actions.

Shrinking violet Christians are welcome to believe as they wish. But it does not change the fact that ‘being offended’ at something like this is patently ridiculous. “Baptized” isn’t a word that ‘some’ Christians have exclusive rights to. They should stop acting like it is because the rest of us who subscribe to Christianity do not remotely agree with that interpretation.

Nor will we bow down to some PC definition of it.

Okie dokie.
I think the statement is hysterically funny.
Baptism can be painful, even deadly. Ever hear about the guy that was recently baptized in the ocean? a big wave came and swallowed him. I read that on FR so it’s true.

Waterboarding causes confessions and a cleansing of the soul when that is done. Very similar to baptism.

I see nothing not-a-ting wrong with Sarah’s statement.
I must not be a Christian.

Oh, about the pledge of Allegiance, why don’t they just say Beelzebub instead of allah?
