Russian separatists down 2 choppers, fighting spreads to Odessa as Ukraine teeters

Pro-Russian separatists shot down two helicopters in a key eastern Ukrainian city, and fighting in the port city of Odessa triggered a fire that killed dozens, as the embattled nation moved closer to the brink of civil war.

Interim Ukraine President Oleksandr Turchynov said "many" pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in a major offensive to regain control of Slavyansk, though it was not clear if the Kiev-backed forces had succeeded. Russia reacted angrily to the offensive by Ukrainian security forces, calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin warned it "effectively destroyed the last hope for the implementation of the Geneva agreements."

In the Black Sea port city of Odessa, Ukraine's third-largest city, a fire that broke out in a trade union building amid clashes killed 31. Fighting there represented another ominous milestone in the conflict that threatens to become a full-blown civil war, as Odessa holds huge historic significance for Russians and Ukrainians alike.

And UKIP may win a lot of whatever they win in UK. And Geert Wilder’s party is gaining power, and French people are getting totally sick of Moslems and Marie le Pen is getting more popular. Many people are getting right sick of the EU.

When Right Sector showed up well after the protests began, so did the violence, the molotovs, the tire chains and clubs, and shortly after, the guns.

It’s been interesting and I’m afraid it will be even more interesting when we wake up.

Wrong!...''Maidan' was armed with guns and ammo

If the Maidan were armed with AK-47's, why were only 13 cops killed? Nidal Hassan killed 13 GI's in Fort Hood using a single pistol. My guess is that these were Airsoft replicas of pistols and rifles:

Dangers to humans

Airsoft pellets traveling with sufficient velocity will leave small lesions when striking exposed skin. While painful, pellets are not typically damaging to the skin. Airsoft pellets can cause serious damage to more vulnerable parts of the body, such as the eyes and ears. Full face masks are recommended during airsoft matches to protect players' teeth and ears, and eye protection is universally required.

Don’t forget Nuland...she’s the one who’s email and voice recording was aired for all to see...trying to determine who the US wanted to assume Gov. Positions in Kiev once the sitting President was removed.

Imagine that...handing out cookies to those who some are now burying their dead kids and husbands...while she sits in a comforting home on the other side of the ocean.

Our so called leaders had no business whatsoever being there in that staged show.

I am getting that feeling as well. It’s like the tide getting sucked out to sea before the tsunami hits. I’m cubicle-bound tonight but will be watching the threads throughout the night.

P.S. appreciate your updates and those of others from twitter and the rest of social media.

Gosh again!!!...so it's a body count that matters to your assessment....how about including then those killed and severely burned by the cocktails thrown at them...In fact never mind...your reasoning is off the scale.

Russia has no right to foment civil disorder in Ukraine while trying to annex it. That's the heart of the matter.

One would think there would be a unanimous agreement on that here.

Big there isn't.

Amazing.

Thanks. I’ll have to dig the book boxes out of the fallout shelter one of these days and find that book. I know it didn’t mention Putin or anything, it’s still an interesting read.

There are wheels within wheels here. It just isn’t so simple as Putin bad/good - Ukraine bad/good. There may be no good to be found at all. And ultimately without all the BS, that is the point many of us here and across the threads are trying to make.

Note also that elections are scheduled for the end of May. What’s Putin’s hurry? Why won’t he wait for the election results before deciding whether or not to annex Ukraine? Doesn’t he want to find out the will of the Ukrainian people?

I would say about 70% would vote against Russian annexation in Donetsk and Luhansk.

That's what Putin is afraid of.

Your capacity for logic is what I'm appealing to here. Nidal Hasan had to hunt down his targets one by one, yet killed 13 of them with a pistol. Maidan demonstrators are armed with AK-47's, face thousands of unarmed riot police packed in in phalanxes and yet only kill 13 of them? I have no idea what your photos depict, but if the Maidan demonstrators had been carrying AK-47's, hundreds of cops would have died there.

“I would say about 70% would vote against Russian annexation in Donetsk and Luhansk.”

That was yesterday, before the Odessa Massacre. This is today, AFTER the Odessa Massacre.

That's your opinion.

However the folks in Donetsk an Luhansk who are anti annexation have been also subject to violence this week.

I would think that would make them more resolved.

That is good for Putin, unfortunately. He is certainly not above having a few dozen people killed to get his way. He didn’t burn down the building, that was pro-Ukrainians, but he sparked the blaze of civil war hoping for this result.

....”Geert Wilder’s party is gaining power”....

Nice you brought him up...I listened to him speak today about Ukraine...very interesting indeed...

He mentioned nations want control of their own laws, money and borders. That the EU ‘un-elected’ Parliment should not be determining these for nation states as there are culture differences as well as national preferences which are among the peoples....’we are different’.

He said that...The EU has become a “Super-State” rather than the’ Trade Institution’ it first was designed for, thus member nations have lost now their own soverighnity.

On Ukraine he said... that the EU/US made a terrible mistake by sacrificing Ukraines stability for sale of it’s own interests.... And further... made the Ukraine people ‘believe’ they would unite their country.

Adding that... Eastern Ukraine people needed to be taken seriously, that the EU fails to see it’s not just about themselves...that the EU and US need to take two steps back and let Kiev and the East work this out.

He also stated Sanctions are counterproductive.

(I do like this guy!)

Per Twitter, THIS GUY, a Right-Sector proponent from Kiev, has been identified as the organizer of the mob that burned all those people to death today. Russian social media has been all over trying to ID the perps, and they have ID'd quite a few.
