Pink Floyd Founders Call on Rolling Stones to Drop Israel Concert
JC.com ^ | May 2, 2014

Posted on 05/04/2014 2:10:02 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Two founders of the Pink Floyd rock band have called on the Rolling Stones to cancel a concert in Israel in an op-ed for news website Salon.com.

In the article, titled “Why the Rolling Stones shouldn’t play in Israel”, Roger Waters and Nick Mason wrote: “Playing Israel now is the moral equivalent of playing Sun City at the height of South African apartheid.”

The aging rockers added that the Rolling Stones’ Israel concert comes at “a critical time in the global struggle for Palestinian freedom and equal rights.”

The Stones are due to perform on June 4 at Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park.

Roger Waters is a longtime backer of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign. Over the past year, he has come under criticism from several Jewish groups, including the Anti-Defamation League, which accused him of antisemitism – an accusation he denies.

Waters’ well known daddy issues manifest themselves in a lot of ways.

Some one should ask him if the root cause of his Israel hate is Brits dying while defending the Jews in WW2.

My opinion of Roger Waters and some other Floyd members is very low, now that I am aware of their rabid hatred of Jews. That said, though, what makes you say that Pink Floyd ‘sucks’ musically? I cannot ready music, and am not trained. What? Did they have “Small Palate Syndrome”, did they repeat the same few formulaic constructions of music over and over? Or were you never a fan of Progressive Rock anyway, not even through other bands of that time, like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Traffic, Frank Zappa, Funkadelics or Todd Rundgren? It’s not for everybody. Some considered the Psychedeilc era too crazy, too indulgent.

That may be, but didn’t Britain also have to defend itself from Germany?

Sure. But Waters, if you look at his interviews and his lyrics is/are all about placing blame.

His entire life is one big tantrum. It’s all there in his very words. Hell the guy couldn’t even stick with a legendary band because of his ‘all about me and my needs’ crap.

Most musicians are liberals and I would be surprised if Gilmour is a conservative. However he doesn’t shove it in our faces. Also in many interviews it is clear he doesn’t share Roger’s views and seems more interested in music than politics.

Actually I wish musicians would shut up about politics. I don’t care about their views. I just want to chill out and listen to music and not be subjected to some limp wristed lecture. In addition Roger and Nick exposed themselves as pretty shallow on this particular subject. If Israel is SA than what does that make the palestines - NK?

The left wants Israel to be the next South Africa. Soon they’ll be calling for sanctions against Israel.

I thought Nick Mason died. Well, I'm glad he's still alive, at anway.

Roger has been stupid for a long time. Talented, but stupid.

Back in the early days of Rock and through the '80s, the music brought us together. It broke down barriers as we shared cultures that would blend to create great new sounds. The words could be thought provoking, about emotions, or about just goin' out and having a good time. It was a way to share our anger about wars and unfairness, and an appreciatiion of those things we all cared about.

What a stupid attitude Roger Waters has. A concert in Israel that brings people together and past the failures of their governments could be a great thing.

I went to a Roger Waters concert about eight years ago. It had giant pig balloons (or whatever) and he lectured us a lot about stuff, instead of letting us feel the positive connections a good concert creates.

Whatever happened to the music? What we used to have almost changed the world, for awhile.

Simon and Garfunkle had it right in "Sounds of Silence". Does anyone even listen to that masterpiece anymore?

By coincidence, that was the last Pink Floyd album.

Yeah, yeah. I know about The Final Cut and the post-Roger so-called "Floyd" muzak ....

But The Wall was the last real Floyd album.

The Final Cut is an excellent album, and "Dogs of War" and "On the Turning Away," from "A Momentary Lapse of Reason," are as good as anything that Gilmour did previously.

The Final Cut has some excellent moments. The title track and The Gunner’s Dream are as fine as anything Waters ever did. Just superb.

But, it was really a Waters solo album. Rick Wright was out and Gilmour said that it had reached the point where he told Waters “If you need a guitarist, let me know,” during the recording sessions.

The post-Waters period was plagued by second rate lyrics and a lack of vision. Yes, Gilmour’s guitar was stunning, as always. But, the band was really nothing more than three guys who used to be in Pink Floyd. Not the real deal.

IMHO, of course.

Gunners and Paranoid Eyes were my favorites on FC. But I really can’t listen to Floyd anymore or any overtly political musicians. I used to be able to separate the people/politics from the music but I can’t enjoy something now knowing just how evil These people are. Been that way a while now for me. I found plenty of music that doesn’t come with politics and liberal mouthpieces attached to replace the Floyds of the world..

Same sentiment. At least (for now) David Gilmour, my favorite PF member, doesn’t seem to be joining the circle jerk.
