Virginia proposal would limit size of gatherings at private homes

A plan to ban "frequent and large gatherings at neighborhood homes" is a lawsuit waiting to happen, a Fairfax County supervisor predicts.

Officials will get an idea Wednesday when public-comment hearings begin in Virginia's most populous county.

"I believe the county is risking a lawsuit and/or a constitution challenge by interfering with peoples' right to assemble," Supervisor Pat Herrity said in a statement.

The proposed zoning ordinance limits "group assembly" at residences to 49 people a day. Such gatherings "shall not occur more frequently than three times in any 40-day period."

Is this in response to beer parties, or TEA PARTIES???

If there's trespassing, illegal parking, disorderly conduct - whatever, then enforce existing law.

This response should have ended this thread.

Whatever happened to common sense?

I recall earlier stories of communities doing this to stop home prayer groups from meeting. They cited parking and traffic on the streets.

I think this is something coming out of Spotsylvania County, which is three counties south of Fairfax.

The main reason for this new encroachment on freedom is a couple use their property for wedding parties anywhere from three to six times per year and the county is trying to find a way to limit those parties.

We have several properties locally that do this. They are out in the rural areas. The law doesn’t make sense.

The law doesn’t make sense.

It does when there are businesses within that county that want the revenue from those parties. Crony Capitalism is not just for the Federal Government.

Societies under martial law often have similar laws.

as mainline churches dwindle in size,...home churches seem to thrive.

this is one way to keep that from happening..even here in the once Good Old U.S.A.

That’s what I’m thinking. If something like that happened in my neighborhood... Well, I know several people up and down my street (myself included) that would make life very, very difficult for an illegal’s home. You don’t need police nor HOAs. They’d get the hint right quick.

Vigilantism doesn't work in every neighborhood.
