Debates aren’t the only way folks decide, but it is one free way to relate to many potential voters at once. Although I expect a lot of national $ to go to whomever wins our primary, we’ll probably end up being outspent. Lefty lawyers have lots of $ and Braley is their #1 candidate. Dodging debates seldom looks good. Only incumbents expected to win easily can get away with it. The left won’t admit it, but Palin’s secret weapon in Alaska was she’s a very good debater. It got her noticed initially and it got her over the top eventually.
Ernst at least was noticeable in the debate, but she was not a dynamo. She seems to be running on the 'Iowa nice' debate platform more than on the issues. But then, consider this is Iowa, from where Grassley has been elected forever and where he intends to run again! Maybe that works here.
Clovis is a complete candidate on the issues. If he can somehow get to the Senate he'll quickly become a Freeper favorite there both on content and on style points! If our neighbors to the north fail to purge Franken, Stuart Smalley will probably end up calling Clovis "a big fat idiot" on the Senate floor. Once. I'd pay to hear Sam's rejoinder.
Whitaker would probably be ok if he got there. His brain and heart seem generally in the right place. He was known as bright and an unusually hard worker back in his Hawkeye football days and seems to have maintained those traits. But he's green and second string compared to Clovis.
Jacobs is everything Mitch McConnell could ask for. Rich, handsome, smart and mouths a great conservative line. Until he talks about wanting to be a statesman, about knowing how to work with the other side to get things done and about how that is needed. He'll be on the GOPe leadership team shortly and will be leading it eventually. But then Braley would be plotting to replace Reid. So at worst, as either will be there 4+ terms, vote the RINO over the next Dungheap.
