In Oregon Senate GOP Primary, Beltway Favorite vs 'Homeless to Harvard' Underdog

The Republican Senate primary in Oregon on May 20 is emerging as one of the most interesting races in the country. The seat, currently held by one-term incumbent Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), has suddenly come in play, at least in the minds of some Republican leaders, due in part to the scandals related to the state of Oregon's failed implementation of an Obamacare exchange.

Despite the Cook Political Report's recent April 25 finding that still rates the race "Solid Democrat," the surprising possibility that Oregon might be in play in the 2014 general election means it could be one of the six Senate seats Republicans need to take from Democrats to become the majority party in the Senate.

The race is also notable for the compelling personal stories of the two leading candidates and the groups who support them, pediatric attorney Monica Wehby and "Homeless to Harvard" attorney Jason Conger.

Wehby grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. Her father was a C.P.A. and her mother was a registered nurse. She attended Notre Dame University and Baylor Medical School and moved to Portland in 1998 to become director of pediatric neurosurgery at Randall Children’s Hospital.

Wehby's campaign has run a highly effective, emotional ad showing the mother of one of her pediatric patients speaking eloquently over tears about how Wehby saved her daughter's life. The ad has run on both cable and network televison in Oregon. The YouTube video of the ad has generated more than 100,000 views.

I am all for picking the candidate you like the best in the primary.

But after the primary, support the winner, no matter what.

We have to put this Obamacare thing to bed, and for that we need the Senate. Anybody who wants to sit this one out is a fool.

Same crappy song, different verse that we are hit with it during every election cycle.

If you truly believe that, and if you are a conservative, why all the supporting comments for Wehby right now?

We are in a primary, RIGHT NOW.

As for your comment "Anybody who wants to sit this one out is a fool." I would say that anyone voting for a politician that supports either Gay Marriage or Abortion, whether or not that candidate is DEM or GOP, whether the primary or general election, is the fool.

Wehby is a pro-choice pediatric surgeon. Don’t you see the contradiction?

Of course she opposes Obamacare. Even some Dems do. But she supported Wyden’s plan. Oh, and she supports same-sex marriage.

A win by Wehby is a loss.

If you think that Cruz and Lee can “keep her in line” you are smoking something!

The US Senate deals with federal issues.

Roe vs. Wade

Apparently, the US Supreme Court doesn’t agree with you.

I’m just saying that US Senators aren’t casting many votes on abortion issues, while state office holders are.

I’m not trying to get anyone elected here.

My supportive comment on Wehby comes from her statement that she will repeal Obamacare. Based on this, I find her acceptable, because this is, far and away, the most important issue to be decided by the Senate.

He opponent is also acceptable, by this same criteria.

Either one works for me after the primary, because they both are on the right side of the Obamacare issue.

Why provide support for someone who is arguably not a republican because she is completely wrong on the social issues in a Primary?

Are you a conservative first or a Republican first?

Are you a conservative or an establishment Republican?

They vote on federal judges, don't they?

Furthermore, you cannot trust the word of someone who supports the idea of murdering unborn children or Deviant Marriage to stay true to any principled moral or political position. If they are willing to compromise on the most blatant of moral issues, they'll compromise on everything else at a drop of the hat if they think it is in in their benefit.

These types are not politicians because they want to serve the citizens, they are there for power and prestige only.

That’s the best case for a RINO over a Dem in the Senate. Granted, I’d vastly prefer the more conservative candidate.
