Russian demography isn’t exactly known for being a meme generator, but one short-hand term for the country’s demographic problems has caught on in a serious way: “the Russian cross.”
This name doesn’t have anything to do with religiosity or with Orthodox Christianity’s famously unique way of rendering the crucifix, but with Russia’s sudden plunge into catastrophic population decline during the 1990′s. When you graphed the absolute number of births and deaths, they changed course so radically that they bore a striking resemblance to a cross.

Hitler’s rise to power was not accompanied by a revival of genuinely traditional Lutheran piety, while the entire period from the fall of the Soviet Union to the present under both Yeltsin and Putin has seen a serious revival in Orthodox piety. Hitler diluted Lutheran Christianity with racist rubbish called “Aryan Christianity”. Putin’s Duma passes laws based on traditional Orthodox moral teachings. Hitler scorned Christian clergy. Putin consults them regularly, including making pilgrimages to monasteries.
You may fancy that being a fairly ruthless or expansionist ruler is somehow at odds with being a Christian, but we Orthodox don’t see it that way. At every Divine Liturgy we sing a hymn the words of which are a prayer composed by St. Justinian the Emperor. You might look at his career. Is Putin a sinner? No man liveth and sinneth not, as the Scriptures tell us. But the only way you can rationally doubt the reality of the Christian revival in Russia is to hold the view that Orthodox Christianity is not “real” Christianity. But, sorry, we’ve got prior claim and an arguably better claim to being the real thing than the Latins, and certainly much better than the confessions from Lutheranism onward that constructed themselves in opposition to the Latin church by fancying that the Scriptures (as shortened by Luther) are a sort of axiom system from which everything pertaining to salvation in Christ can be derived by discursive reason.

FWIW, while the Russian Orthodox Church pretty much enjoys state church status under Putin, there are scores of other religions with congregations free to proselytize, unlike the Old Soviet Union.
Meanwhile, leftism enjoys state church status under ObaMao and other religions are free only to either go along with it or not proselytize too loudly lest they invite an IRS crackdown.

The United States is still demographically a Christian nation but you'd never know it from observing our government. All you ever read about our government doing these days is supporting regimes which persecute Christians and Christianity, and then you ask whose side you think God might be on? You think God could ever be on the side of George Soros, Monsanto, and the Obunga state department?? The rulers of Russia have taken a hard look at the ongoing suicide of the West and determined that Russia is not going to participate. This may in fact be the biggest factor in the tidal wave of propaganda and disinformation which the West is subjected to regarding Russia and Vladimir Putin, and in the policies of our state department. The bankers who run the West hope to prevent the calamity which they are facing by bail-ins and austerity programs and that, combined with the Malthusian and greentard policies of our governments figure to produce a world of major grief for the West over the coming decades. Those people can ill afford the alternative example of a prosperous and happy version of reality in the BRIC nations for everybody on the planet to see on television and the internet.
