in a country that wastes between 30 and 40 percent of its food

That's sad. My family is by nature thrifty, and I'd guess we waste less than 2% of our food. When bread starts to go stale or moldy (very rare), it gets toasted and turned into bread crumbs for cooking. Meat? That never sits long enough to go bad. Fresh fruit and vegetables get eaten before they rot, or bananas that are too brown become smoothies or banana bread. The idea of so much avoidable waste disgusts me.

I try not to waste too. Sure helps on the outrageous food bill too.
