A Russian aircraft carrier task group has sailed into the English Channel under escort by a Royal Navy warship. HMS Dragon met the Russian warships in the south western approaches to the Channel on Wednesday and is shadowing them as they are expected to head into the North Sea and back to Russia. The heavy carrier Admiral Kuznetsov is accompanied by the nuclear-powered Kirov class cruiser Peter the Great and several support ships after a five-month mission to the Mediterranean.

A direct result of electing a weak President in 2008. There will be more of this.

Then why did they do this under Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush? This is normal, happens all the time.

I don’t know about naval tech, but the destroyer looks like it could take that carrier down without breaking a sweat. Do I see smoke coming from that carrier’s stack? What do they power that thing with... coal?

“This is normal, happens all the time.”

Ok not sure on that part directly what is normal for them. But they are doing a large amount of blustering and showing of force.
And invading sovereign nations!!

“The Admiral Kuznetsov is conventionally powered by eight gas-fired boilers and four steam turbines, each producing 50,000 hp (37 MW), driving four shafts with fixed-pitch propellers. Her maximum speed is 29 knots (54 km/h), and her range at maximum speed is 3,800 miles (6,100 km). At 18 knots (33 km/h), her maximum range is 8,500 miles (13,700 km).”

seems slow for a fleet carrier and smoky for a gas fired powerplant. maybe they should invest in a Power Commander.

After a 5-month deployment those boilers are encrusted inside and I bet “Kuznetsov” isn’t capable of anything near that “29-Knot” top speed.

OTOH, she may have spent most of her “cruise” tied up at a Syrian dock.

Would it help if they got out and pushed?

:-)

She's not gas fired. Oil powered steam turbine.

From the article:
“Naval sources said it was not unusual
for Russian warships to pass through the channel
and the Kuznetsov was also escorted past British waters
on its way out in December
when it passed Scotland heading south.”

“Sailing up the Thames is home for the Russkies?”

2 basic routes:

1) Around Ireland and through the GIUK Gap (the long way), or

2) Up the English Channel.

Same choice the Spanish Armada had. And either way you’re going to pull a lot of attention from the RN & RAF.

. ...’’either way you’re going to pull a lot of attention from the RN and RAF.’’Yeah no doubt. That’s way Putin wants the Ukraine so much, the elusive ‘’warm water port’’ the Russkies have always wanted.
