Search warrant: Missoula man may have been high when German student shot

Markus Kaarma may have been under the influence of marijuana when he shot and killed German exchange student Diren Dede, according to a search warrant requested by Missoula police.

The search warrant also indicates that during previous burglaries of the Missoula home, unknown suspects had taken all the marijuana and marijuana pipes out of the garage.

Kaarma, 29, is charged with deliberate homicide for the shooting of the foreign exchange student, who was finishing his junior year abroad at Big Sky High School.

According to the affidavit, Kaarma and his wife, Janelle Pflager, had been robbed several times before and set the garage up to ensnare a potential burglar.

The garage door was intentionally left open and the couple set up a motion detector and a baby monitor in the space. A purse was also left in the garage.

In the early morning hours of April 27, Dede entered Kaarma’s open garage. Authorities have not indicated why Dede entered the garage, but once alerted to his presence, Kaarma grabbed a shotgun and exited the home. He fired four shots into the back of his garage, which was dark at the time.

Two of the shots hit and killed Dede, who was pronounced dead at St. Patrick Hospital.

According to the affidavit, Kaarma fired after the teenager attempted to make verbal contact with him. The affidavit also states that he told his hairdresser several days earlier that he had been staying up late at night to "kill some (expletive) kid."

Subsequent searches of the Grant Creek home revealed Kaarma kept a mason-style glass jar containing marijuana in a kitchen pantry, and a neighbor told police that Kaarma smoked marijuana in the garage.

A neighbor also informed police that burglars had taken marijuana and marijuana pipes out of the garage during the previous burglary.

A search warrant requested by Missoula Police Detective Dean Chrestenson and signed by District Court Judge Karen Townsend allowed law enforcement to take a blood sample from Kaarma on April 28, while he was in the Missoula County jail pending bail.

It's anticipated that the results of the blood draw will be available within a month.

On Tuesday, Kaarma's attorney said he is still investigating the allegation of marijuana use. Attorney Paul Ryan has indicated his client will plead not guilty.

Nah, no way, weed makes you mellow that's what they all say. So if he was under the influence of marijuana it just proves that the kid he shot must have been extra aggressive, right?

NO, I will not tag it, if you can't figure it out on your own then I'm sorry for you.

Guys who have hairdressers shouldn't own shotguns.

That said, there is an interesting article in Der Spiegel about the boy who was killed written from the European perspective.

"According to the affidavit, Kaarma fired after the teenager attempted to make verbal contact with him."

It's not likely that a burglar would try to talk to occupants.

"The affidavit also states that he told his hairdresser several days earlier that he had been staying up late at night to "kill some (expletive) kid.""

"Hairdresser," eh? He must be a liberaltarian.

Interesting that Der Spiegel does not use the last name of the burglar. They only identify the perp as Diren D.

Apparently the perp liked the freedom of America. He just didn’t know anything about accepting the responsibilities of his own actions.

On general principles it is impossible that the shooter was high when he shoot the burglar. Everyone knows that those high on drugs are filled with love and peace and cannot under any circumstances pull a trigger. Like WOW Man!

“Shoot” in my previous post should be “shot.”

Really, they're blaming this one on pot?

Will they also be checking to see if there was a 1/2 bottle of Whiskey on the counter?

The guy was certainly nuts before this happened.

Thanks for the link. If not posted, you should. From the article:

But Diren's death also says something about Germany. His family hasn't just received support from the public, they have also been confronted with hostility. The Hamburg football club FC Teutonia 05, which many have confused with Diren's club due to the similarity of its name, had to turn off the comment function on its website after a multitude of xenophobic postings. Diren's friends, who have been collecting donations, have been told by passersby that "the Turk" deserved to be shot to death. What, after all, was he doing in that garage?

“And, he says, nobody talks about a trend that has been present in American towns and suburbs for years: garage hopping. As a rule, it involves going into neighbors’ garages to steal beer out of refrigerators many Americans keep there for alcoholic beverages.”

Ummmm....I’m a 56 year old natural born citizen of the USA, and I’ll be darned if I have ever heard of this quaint old custom!

Stuff happens but it is very hard to be angry or sad with pot.

I knew a kid who’s grandma was killed by medical negligence. He was thinking of shooting the doctor every waking moment and couldn’t sleep because of anger. Then he smoked pot and said he instantly didn’t feel any anger at all.

I know the only times I’ve ever been really angry is when I was about 1/2 through a good bottle.

So the results of pot smoking are unpredictable; i.e. some will kill their neighbors and others will not?
