Displaced Afghan women risk "cheap" marriages, isolation and depression

Violence against women is endemic in Afghanistan with cases of “honour” killings, rape, domestic violence and forced marriage well-documented and well-known.

But women and girls who have been displaced from their homes during decades of conflict seem to be even worse off, according to the latest edition of Forced Migration Review, which looks at Afghanistan's displaced people and their prospects after foreign troops withdraw this year.

Displaced Afghan women are especially vulnerable to exploitation and violence because of their often reduced circumstances, according to a piece by Camille Hennion, project director at the Kabul-based Samuel Hall research group.

...

A law to eliminate violence against women, signed by President Hamid Karzai in 2009, still hasn't been ratified by parliament. Ratification has been stalled by MPs who view some of the articles as contradicting Sharia, according to Lida Ahmad's essay on sexual violence in Afghanistan.

The law has a clearer definition of sexual violence and bans rape, forced prostitution, forced marriage, child marriage and baad - the traditional practice of settling disputes by giving a young girl from a culprit's family for marriage to a man in the family of the wronged party.

Maybe Match.com could improve the women’s chances for leaving the hell hole with which they live.

Why is there alarm now after 300 girls were kidnapped, but nothing when boys were burned alive?
On February 25, between 40 and 59 children were killed by the fundamentalist militant group. Early that morning, Boko Haram terrorists attacked a boarding school and shot many of children, aged 11 to 18, while they slept. Some of the students were gunned down as they attempted to flee. Others had their throats slit. In some buildings, Boko Haram militants locked the doors and set the building alight. The occupants were burned alive.

Maybe Boy Wonder has some kind of a beef with Nigeria. Consistent foreign policy? Don't make me laugh.

The First Wookie did the weekly radio speech and noted the situation in Nigeria. Why didn’t the president do the speech? Was it that he, raised as a Muslim, is forbidden to publically denounce other Muslims??? Hmmm????

Since 1980 the warfare and killings in Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan must have produced a notable surplus of females in those countries. Their chances of acquiring support from attachments to males must have become more difficult.

But doubtless wymyn such as Hillary, Oprah, Tina Brown, Whoopi, Nancy, et al will ride to the rescue-——— after all they care so much.

the main product of Muslim polygamy is a population of angry young men who are ripe recruits for terrorism. The Koran supposedly limits a man to four wives but in countries where there are vast disparities of wealth this is routinely violated.

Osama bin Laden’s father, a successful Saudi businessman, had 22 wives and 54 children. The unbalance between unmarried men and the available women in Saudi Arabia is the highest in the world. Is it any wonder that 15 of the 19 September 11th hijackers were Saudi nationals?

No worries from the left when Christians in Egypt, Turkey, Armenia, Syria ... are tortured, then killed . Or Christian white women raped, then ...

The US government is even building Mosques and Madrassahs in their areas at our taxpayer expense.

You’d think that in Saudi Arabia that the native population has a high enough income to support a spouse or maybe import one. The differences in moslem sects may have an effect though.

Saudi Arabia imports many people : doctors to maids to slaves.

Plus the Sunni Muslim versus the Shia Muslim thing.
