"China is in yet another territorial dispute with a neighbor, and this time things are already getting a little physical. After Beijing plunked down its first-ever deepwater drilling rig in disputed waters off Vietnam this week, the Vietnamese navy made clear its displeasure. China says Vietnam's vessels rammed its ships 171 times over the course of four days, reports the New York Times. The newspaper quotes a Vietnamese political analyst who sums things up thusly: “Invasion is in their blood, and resistance is in our blood.”

Resistance might be in their blood, but this time they won't have the Chinese helping them out.

The Chinese actually invaded Vietnam, briefly, in the late 1970’s, it was a stand off. They may still have the support of Russia.

Actually, the Chinese had their asses kicked and withdrew (retreated) within a month. The Chinese PLA has modernized considerably since 1979 however.

Yeah, I remember reading about it. But by then, the North Vietnamese military had a lot of battle experience. The Chinese took huge losses, and when it was over they said they taught the Vietnamese a lesson.

Russia might sit this one out though.

Well it did take the North Vietnamese Army to remove Pol Pot from power.

I give the North Vietnamese credit for that. Someone had to do it.

That’s probably what really ticked the ChiComs off, Pol Pot was their boy.

Too bad they didn’t send the Chinese Pol Pot’s head.

Something tells me that the ChiComs were the ones that did the ramming at least once or twice.

It was probably more the case of a Viet pontoon boat “ramming” a modern cruiser.

This is a classic SouthEast Asian problem: How to deal with your large belligerent neighbor (AKA China).

What will happen here is what has always happened in Thailand.

The Vietnamese will offer drilling rights or something like that to another party (AKA Russia).

The bad blood between the Vietnamese and the Chinese going back hundreds of years.

Easily. Closer to about 2,000 years.

With our approval. China consulted with us for support in case the Ruskies decided to make a move.

Funny how Vietnam plays the victim card when in fact Vietnam is just as bad and maybe worse than China. Let’s see...??? Ever heard of Cambodia, Laos, and Champa? Vietnam has invaded and colonized her neighbors and still have troops stationed on foreign territory. Looks like the Vietnamese are getting a taste of their own medicine.
