Peach State voters head to the polls on May 20th.
Michelle Nunn will inarguably be the Democrats nominee for the states open Senate seat, made vacant by Saxby Chamblisss foregoing a bid for a third term.
Shes raised gobs of money from national forces, and many regard her as their partys best shot at a pickup in 2014, albeit one most handicappers say will take serious lightening in a bottle.
However long her odds may be, its not a race that can be taken lightly, given the deluge of liberal dollars paying for campaign ads attempting to dupe voters into thinking shes not like other Democrats, despite the fact that her victory would equate to a vote for Harry Reid as majority leader.
Five top-tier GOPers are vying for a shot three congressmen, a former statewide office holder, and someone not cut from the political cloth.
Thats David Perdue, and now is the time for someone with his background in Georgia.
The last names familiar to Peach Staters hes the first cousin of Sonny Perdue, the states first Republican governor since Reconstruction. But he took a different path, this is his first run for office, and the story preceding him is that of the American Dream.
A self-made businessman, he grew up in Middle Georgia, worked and paid his way through school, and ultimately embarked on a 40 year run in business that saw him ink Reeboks first exclusive deal with the NFL and expand Dollar General by 2,500 stores, creating thousands of jobs in the process.
That career took him and his family the world over, and hes witnessed first-hand what the hammer of big governments excess and regulatory machine can do to the private sector.
In this writer's mind, it sets him apart from the others in the field.
Perdues experience makes him a different kind of candidate, someone uniquely fitted to deal with the $17 trillion debt that should be on the mind of our leaders with each and every decision.
Point being his legacys in place and hell tell you that hes running so the next generation has an opportunity to leave a legacy of its own. Survey the race and its clear hes the only one without an obvious political motivation.
That kind of pedigree is a refreshing voice in a field dotted with longtime officeholders and perennial candidates, evidenced by Perdues surge in the polls since February.
Moreover, from a political standpoint, theres a lot to think about when it comes to Georgias future.
Though Nunn is the underdog in 2014, the state has been undergoing a rapid change in demographics for some time. Most agree that by 2018 or 2020 Democrats will have sufficient numbers to give the GOP a run for its money statewide.
The reality that we must elect a conservative senator who can win in both 2014 and 2020 cannot be lost over the course of this process.
Ultimately, that leaves a simple question who is best fit to carry that mantle?
Is it one of three congressmen two with a penchant for unelectable comments and one who was first elected the same year as Bill Clinton? Is it a former Georgia secretary of state who has sought office more times in the last eight years than the Atlanta Braves have won playoff games?
Or is it a first-time candidate with a different kind of background?
The polls bear this out Perdue runs best in head-to-head matchups with Michelle Nunn.
With no offense intended to their accomplishments, the remainder of this field smacks of yesterday.
Georgians deserve an alternative to yesterday - someone who'll take the blade to Washington's outrageous spending, charge against Obamacare, and fight to unleash economic growth, not more government.
Thats David Perdue.
Attacks are sure to fly over this final week, as well as through the inevitable runoff, but Im placing my stock with an electable conservative who will be a strong voice for Georgia moving forward.
Beyond personal preferences, its imperative Republicans put forward a united front against Michelle Nunn when the primary process is all said and done the consequences in both 2014 and beyond are too great to ignore.
Perdue is the liberal establishment choice. He is absolutely 100% unacceptable.
I'm a Georgia native, born in Macon, and try to keep up with things there.
So who's good to go?
At this point, voting for Karen Handel to stop Perdue is the clear-cut choice (though I have another preference who sadly won’t make the runoff).
He claims he is conservative and is opposed to amnesty 100%. But, you know I just no longer trust these corporate types. We have voted for them all along and it seems that all we get in the way of conservative policy wins is cutting their taxes. And the more we cut them the less they care about cutting spending or anything else conservative. I have completely gone over with Corporatists since so many of them have gone in for amnesty. I feel like the wife who thought she had such a good marriage and found the husband cheating and that was the end of it right there.
Karen Handel must know the illegals are voting and that Hispanics by a large margin are voting Democrat. That was part of her job description.
Gingrey and Broun are against amnesty.
I’d trust Kingston on amnesty more than Perdue. Kingston is just going to be a fiscal liberal who will not cause any grief for Mitch.
Perdue looks like he could be a Vance McAllister, Michael Grimm or someone like that.
Perdue has no voting record so he can say anything. My gut feeling is that you are right and he will be a Johnny Isakson. Being a businessman doesn’t mean he’s going to vote conservative.
I’m voting for Paul Broun in the primary and I’ll vote for Karen Handel in the runoff if Broun doesn’t make it.
Michelle Nunn has a better chance of getting whacked in a drone strike than getting elected to that senate seat.
You write that you are someone who is willing to support/vote for Handel. Why?
Ths is not a setup. I am a Georgia voter who personally has Handel at the bottom of my list. What is it that you see that i may be missing?
Side note: I am voting, at this time, for Perdue, but i try not to set my mind till i get in the booth. I have had the chance to spend a little time with him before he began his campaign and we had a lot of commonality of beliefs on freedom and guns rights. This is not an endorsement, however, because, as you say; no voting history.
I saw the debate they had tonight and I would lean to Handel but Perdue was impressive since obviously people were targeting him. Most people seem to think that Perdue, Handel and /or perhaps Kinston will be in a runoff. Pretty hard to imagine one person getting 50%.
David Purdue attacked his opponent because she is “only” a High School grad. He is a smug nabob, And I look forward to voting for his opponent during the primary. David Purdue is a snooty closet liberal.
Don’t get me wrong. Paul Broun is the guy we should all be voting for. He is the real meal deal conservative. Karen Handle is IMO not a RINO but also not a rabble rouser. She will usually vote the right way but probably follow the leadership too much.
I bought Johnny’s Isakson’s BS and voted him in for Senate initially. He’s a business man just like Perdue. There is no way I’m going to trust Perdue not to be another Isakson. I’ll go with Handel as she has a record you can look at.
Go to Redstate and read an article Erik Erickson wrote. Its something like “My Heart is With Broun But My Head is with Handel” He is for Broun but thinks Handel can win.
Ok - thank you
