Longtime Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) didn’t submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot this year, Wayne County, Michigan, officials said in a report released on Friday.

Conyers, who has represented Detroit in the House for 49 years, came up more than 400 signatures shy of qualifying for the ballot because his signature-gatherers were not registered voters, according to the Detroit News.

A final report is due next Tuesday. Conyers’ legal team is expected to appeal the ruling later this week.

He’s a Democrat and an oppressed minority—Laws don’t apply to him.

Trying again. Conyers can run and win as a write in but I think he faces a real threat this time.

What do you want to bet that they’ll seek a waver of the rules because of his protected status?

Yep, he’s a shoe in for re-election.

He’s not even worried.

Conyers isn’t the only unqualified ‘RAT politician running around out there giving away the taxpayers’ money.

Idiot.

Though I expect him to run as a write-in.

Normally I'd agree, but in this case it is easier to do the standard Dim tactic used when an election is close; they will “find” a few pages that were “misplaced”.

True, this would be questioned if it was a Republican, so maybe I'm just clarifying how they will not have the law applied.

If they discard misspelled “Conyers” he will have less than a 50/50 chance in his district, but then “voter intent” will rear its ugly head if it’s close.

That’s a shaky bet these days. After all the current mayor Mike Duggan (the white guy) ran a write in campaign and beat Benny Napoleon (the black guy) to the general election ballot and won anyway.

Detroit is getting a lot of oversight from the state and they know it.

Hey 0bama shouldn’t have been on the ballot for the past two elections, but we see how that went.

This doesn’t just happen. Not to a Democrat, unless the Democrat power brokers want to get rid of Conyers and replace him with someone else.

Don’t pop those champagne corks just yet. From the original Detroit News article:

the Conyers campaign has insisted it has paperwork showing Pennington and Willis-Pittman submitted their voter registration papers on Dec. 13 — not on April 28, as state records now show.

Included in Friday’s report were two letters dated April 30 written to Pennington and Willis-Pittman by Detroit Elections Director Willie G. Wesley Jr. saying the clerk who received the pair’s voter registrations “erroneously” entered the date of Dec. 13, 2013, into the Qualified Voter File database.

“The date of registration should be the date the application was received at our office,” the two-paragraph letters read, adding the voter file has been corrected to reflect the date the applications were received — April 28.

Wesley Jr. saying the clerk who received the pair’s voter registrations “erroneously” entered the date of Dec. 13, 2013,

that was not erroneous... the clerk retro-dated it... notice it is right as they began collecting signatures...
