As complaints and cavils about the Affordable Care Act fall by the wayside, one piece of the law looms ever larger as its most controversial element: the employer mandate, which next year will impose a penalty on businesses with 50 or more employees for not offering them health coverage.
Indeed, if not for partisanship in Washington, there's a chance that the employer mandate would have been revised or repealed long ago. It has always been questioned by a broad spectrum of economists, who are uneasy about its labor market effects.

The above is the most significant article this year. It appears the Democrats, to save themselves, will have to impeach Obama. When that happens we can dispense with everything he has done. But attacking Obamacare piecemeal will only lessen the pressure on them.
Boehner did not call it “a law” of the land but “THE law of the land”...
The employer mandate was included as a diversion intended to be challenged and removed from the law (leaving all health insurance in the hands of government); it will allow employers can remove healthcare costs from their books (which is what Republicans wanted anyway).
No ... kill it all.
No.
The entire thing needs to go.
Will they still have to pay the Cadillac Tax ?
You are kidding, right? Democrats would almost literally chew off their own legs before they would impeach Obama. A large number of Republicans would too.
Obama will NEVER, EVER be impeached.
Lets define “Affordable”. I offer health insurance for my employees - in fact unless they are covered on another policy like a spouse or parent they MUST take coverage.
We just got our renewal for this year - its ONLY a 92% increase in premium! Wooo Hooo!
On what planet do these clowns call this affordable? How is my coverage different between the day BEFORE renewal and the day AFTER renewal? I get no additional benefit from the new coverage, nothing that wasn’t covered before. We have dental, vision, and very good medical coverage with a $1500 deductible and minor co-pay. We cover birth control, probably abortion too (never checked), mental health is covered up to the same Obama Care limit (I think it’s a million bucks).
I am wondering how if I was covered for about half of the renewal amount - what am I paying for?
I suspect I am paying for all those who pay nothing into anything ever!
What a crock of crap....
This whole thing needs to go away.
“Obama will NEVER, EVER be impeached. “
Did you read the article?
Just wait kiddos, insurance Renewal for small business comes up in a couple of months. People will be so angry when companies cancel their insurance and throw them onto the market to find replacement policies. Notice I left out “affordable”, because it won’t be.
Good article, but impeachment is a long shot. It would take an in-your-face catastrophe that even low-information citizens perceive as a presidential high crime.
IRS targeting should have met that standard, but a whistle blower it does not appear to be going anywhere. We will see what Rep. Gowdy does with Benghazi...
Nuke the entire site from orbit—it’s the only way to be sure...........................
Well, I found out who is helping to ensure the right to free healthcare for people who can’t or won’t provide for themselves.
My out of pocket went from $0 + $1250.00 deductible in 2013 to $5200.00 plus a $1250.00 deductible for 2014. What a deal eh?
I’m a good slave. no/s
FUBO
The Individual Mandate needs major reform, at a minimum. To force a citizen to buy a crappy product with high premiums and, even worse, very high deductibles is outrageous!
“As complaints and cavils about the Affordable Care Act fall by the wayside...”
The reasons are:
1. Complainers are dead or no longer in a position to complain.
2. Whiners are going to have their say at the ballot box. Nothing more needs to be said.
What health coverage? Am I correct that my belief is that we will have to apply for this health insurance on Obamacare site. I understand that private insurance companies, if still in business, will have to have the same program that the Cadillac plan has. No matter what avenue you take the cost will skyrocket and the deductible will be huge.
Hiltzik’s wrong. If it wasn’t for partisanship, the mandate would have been operational by now. The only reason Obama’s holding off on implementing the most offensive parts of the bill is because he’s afraid the public will figure out what a piece of crap it is before the ‘14 elections.
To believe Hiltzik, you’d have to believe that an individual who routinely misuses executive orders would be sitting around the White House wringing his hands and saying, “I’d like to eliminate the employer mandate, but those mean old Republicans won’t let me”. Humbug!
