In the fall of 2010, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Oprah that he'd be making a generous gift to Newark, New Jersey. As Oprah said in her Oprah way, "one ... hundred ... million ... dollars" would be given to Newark Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the three began the Startup:Education foundation.
The plan was to turn Newark into what Zuckerberg called "a symbol of educational excellence for the whole nation," spent on retaining the best teachers, and creating environments that would produce successful students and, one day, graduates.
Newark is a city wrought with crime. Its graduation rate is about 67%. It needed the help, and Booker's vision sounded promising.
Between 2010 and 2012, The New Yorker reports that "more than twenty million dollars of Zuckerbergs gift and matching donations went to consulting firms with various specialties: public relations, human resources, communications, data analysis, [and] teacher evaluation." Many of the consultants were being paid upwards of $1,000 a day.
Everybodys getting paid but Raheem still cant read," Vivian Cox Fraser, president of the Urban League of Essex County, was quoted saying.
Today, the money is pretty much gone, and Newark has hardly become that symbol of excellence.

I always heard that a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.
Kind of like Newark, huh?
so, did the largely minority student body in Newark not want to act white? In spite of all that money, liberals found to their dismay that simply adding tons of money didn’t solve the problem????
Any move that stops short of sacking nearly every teacher and ‘administrator’ is futile.
He would have had better success if he spent the money trying to train a donkey to win the Kentucky Derby.
Zuckerberg’s a democrat. He would hate anything done by a Republican... If you think otherwise, get some reporter to ask him.
“Newark is a city wrought with crime. Its graduation rate is about 67%. It needed the help, and Booker’s vision sounded promising.”
That graduation rate is a lie; they still use “social promotion”, where illiterate minorities are given meaningless pieces of paper to show “progress”.
Mark Zuckerberg simply donated to the Democratic Party by funneling it through the teachers’ unions; after all, they own the party.
Zukerberg is free to wast his money however he chooses. However, if he actually wants to make a difference, he might consider contributing toward alternatives to the public school system. The competition would help the public schools, which are under-performing, as any monopoly tends to do.
Of course it was a waste.
Newark New Jersey is a lost cause - and it has been for about 40 years.
“Any move that stops short of sacking nearly every teacher and administrator is futile.”
Here in Nj the number of administrators is dropping as the property tax cap ensures income is used to pay for (unionized) teachers’ raises. Administrators have no such scam working, and are laid off to give teachers their raises.
“Liberals” are materialist who think money will solve anything. Just throw enough money at something a like magic it is transformed. And if it doesn’t work, it wasn’t enough. Throw more.
Sending money to a corrupt administration won’t solve the problem.
That is a sewer for money. Money goes into a government program and vanishes.
Throwing money at inner-city students doesn’t work? Color me schocked.
Giving money to Newark Government and expecting change?
Was his other choice sending money to Venezuela’s government?
He’s just a dumb-@ss, who happened to strike it rich on this Facebook score.
It is only a failure if you didn’t understand the goals of the program. The program reduced income inequality by taking money from Suckerberg and redistributing it to upper middle class middle management. What’s to complain about?
Eff him let him throw his money away, he stole it anyway.
Wow. Competition works?
I have absolutely no problem with people of wealth but this Mark Zuckerberg character.....I just cannot stand even looking at him for some reason.
"The secret to happiness is freedom...
And the secret to freedom is courage."
A stark reminder than throwing money at a bad system won’t fix the problem. Derrick Coleman blew most of his NBA fortune trying to revive Detroit, with similar results.
Obviously, it wasn't enough money. $200 million would have done the trick quite nicely.
And if $200 million didn't do it, then they must have needed $500 million.
We have a winner!
It was money laundering!
Years ago I hired a newly graduated engineer who attended 1-12 in Nicaragua. He spoke excellent English and wrote it better than any college grad I’d interviewed. He told me that his first 8 years of school were in a dirt-floored shack with multiple grades in the same room. After long discussion I concluded he was so well educated because his parents made it a priority. (They spoke no English, but they made darn sure he did.) So, it’s not the money that counts, because when he was in school Nicaragua’s entire national budget was less than Florida’s school budget.
“WE NEED MO MONEY!”
You can lead a kid to books, but you can’t make him read.
If the parents gave two shakes about their kids’ education,
that would have already happened.
Thanks; if Zuckerberg actually cared about black people there are better ways to show it. How about setting that money up as scholarships to get them out of the hands of the Public Education Industrial Complex?
And people are shocked by this?
Our schools don’t NEED more money!
Our schools NEED NON-UNION Teachers and Administrators, who have the EDUCATION of our children as their first priority.
“Education” is NOT “Indoctrination” to a Leftist idology!
You could get rid of 99% of administrative staff in this country and not miss a beat.
Surely Zuckerberg knew what he was doing: Not donating money to help schools, students or education, but donating money to enrich democrats. If he wanted to help schools, he would have given money directly to them. His concern is ingratiating himself to the party so he can eliminate his tax exposure and benefit from the near-slave labor expected to result from amnesty.
Zuckerberg has a LOT of money and he remembers what happened to Bill Gates and Microsoft.
If he actually did something effective and bypassed the Democrats and PEIC, you can bet he’d find himself in front of a committee as soon as the Democrats had the pull for it.
Good point, though I suspect Zuckerberg is on board with the Dem agenda.
A naïve but well-intentioned act of generosity.
Next time give to a faith-based charity, Mark.
Gubmint bureaucracies just suck cash down the rat hole.
In fact Oprah and Zuckerberg and maybe even Gates each need to pony up $200 million dollars into Newark and REALLY fix the education system for the little children.
They're just racists. What do they need all that money for? just give it to Newark. And when they fix Newark.... ON TO DETROIT!!!
hahahahahahaha... let's all tweet and pass this on the social media. that the white liberals AREN'T spending enough of their money.. Bwahahahahahahaha...
Reality ran into a Sucker-berg.
Of course it’s a waste. Money will not change the rotten culture that exists there.
The teachers and administrators are part of the community that uses the schools. It's the culture that is rotten, and sacking teachers and administrators does nothing to change the culture. Any new teacher will have the same rotten students and baby mommas as did the previous teacher.
Money doesn’t equal good education any more than money equals good taste.
I’m glad they wasted it because that’s $100M less that commie NSA-bot can use to screw up other lives.
Mark learns “you can’t fix stupid.” /S
Regarding some more detail on the “how and the why”...
“How To Give Like Mark Zuckerberg”
“Newark New Jersey is a lost cause - and it has been for about 40 years.”
The Newark Bears just went out of business (who could have seen that coming? /s); the Nets escaped to Brooklyn rather than be coerced into Newark like the Devils (whose owner has subsequently stated publicly that he would never have moved the team there if he knew how the city intended to squeeze him for money). These pathetic attempts to keep these welfare reservations viable with public/private combinations are tiresome and fruitless; they desperately want white people to stay after 5 pm and spend money there, but won’t address the primary reason for the daily late afternoon exodus. Jersey City, on the otherhand, has basically expelled The Problem from whole areas leading to a renaissance along the “Gold Coast” on the Hudson River.
Beverly Hall was the superintendent of Newark schools. She was involved in the Atlanta test cheating. When she left Newark, millions of dollars were missing, so I’m told.
