Russia targets space projects in response to U.S. high-tech sanctions

Reuters 4 hours ago

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will bar the United States from using Russian-made rocket engines for military satellite launches, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Tuesday, retaliating for sanctions on high-tech equipment which Washington has imposed over the Ukraine crisis.

He also said Russia would reject a U.S. request to prolong the use of the International Space Station beyond 2020.

Russia pledged to respond in kind when the United States said last month that it would deny export licenses for any high-technology items that could aid Russian military capabilities and would revoke existing licenses.

Moscow's measures would affect MK-33 and RD-180 engines which Russia supplies to the United States, Rogozin told a news conference. "We are ready to deliver these engines but on one condition that they will not be used to launch military satellites," he said.

Washington wants to keep the International Space Station, a $100 billion orbital outpost that is a project of 15 nations and a showcase of Russian-U.S. cooperation, flying until at least 2024, four years beyond the previous target.

In spite of differences on foreign policy and security matters, Washington and Moscow have cooperated extensively on space exploration. Russian Soyuz spacecraft are the only way astronauts can get to the space station, whose crews include both Americans and Russians.

Rogozin also said Russia will suspend the operation of GPS satellite navigation system sites in Russia from June and seek talks with Washington on opening similar sites in the United States for Russia's own system, Glonass.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave....

There was always a reason for the apparently wasteful and duplicative programs this nation once followed in so many fields. But with “globalization”, these were abandoned as “too expensive”.

Now we have to start all over again. And this time from far behind.

A blind squirrel could have predicted this, and Obama is undoubtedly pleased. He can further damage the US and blame the Russians at the same time.

I used to not understand when libertarians would ask why the US Government gave NASA a monopoly on US space exploration. Surely, I thought, space is so complex and important, the Federal Government MUST be involved.

Now, I see that with the Federal Government and NASA in charge, the USA is effectively out of the space-business.

Reminds of the Milton Friedman quote - put a Federal Agency in charge of the Saraha Desert, and before long, we’ll have a shortage of sand.

We could have launched our next moon program on the energy of those opposed to the policy we adopted.

Nobody would listen.

Our own team in control of the White House, the Senate, and the House did very little to stave this off.

As Conservatives, we should be ashamed of those who have claimed to represent us.

soebarkah doesn’t care. It’s haram for muslims to concern themselves with goings-on outside this world, at least until global sharia is achieved.

To elaborate, we should be relying on hardware from our own U.S.A. and nations proven to be more friendly.

Even many “friendly” nations don’t hesitate to seize the advantage when we’re in need.

Back in 08 Duncan Hunter ran down a whole list of countries that screwed us due to their opposition to the Iraq war or just the opportunity to gouge us. Switzerland refused to sell us computer chips that went into guidance systems for cruise missiles. We ended up having China make them for us. China jacked up the price on armor grade steel. Fortunately we found a manufacturer of the steel here.

The simple fact is that we need to be a whole lot more self sufficient.

The ISS has nothing to do with making Muslims feel good about themselves so no great loss to NASA.

The Feds didn’t make the Atlas V use the (Russian) RD-180 engine. That was a decision Lockheed-Martin/Boeing reached, one more example of how wonderful “offshoring” and “outsourcing” is. It was cheap, you know.
