Nova Scotia school board defends short shorts ban

A Nova Scotia school board is defending its decision to tell students wearing short shorts to change their clothes.

Julia Roberts-Davison of Truro, N.S., has started a petition online after her Grade 8 daughter was told not to wear her cut-off jean shorts to school again. Other girls were also told to change their clothes.

"I was told that their shorts are a distraction to the learning environment. That morning, the students were told that their shorts are a distraction to male students and teachers," Roberts-Davison wrote in her Change.org petition.

"My daughter is not an object to be ogled. This is the worst possible thing that you can tell a teenage girl: you can't wear shorts because you're a distraction."

But the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is defending the decision, telling the Truro Daily News they use the fingertip test -- students are asked to put their hands down at their sides and their shorts cannot be shorter than their fingertips.

In a photo Roberts-Davison sent to the paper, it shows her daughter's shorts reach the end of her curled-up fingers.

In responding to messages on its Facebook page, a board spokesperson noted students are allowed to wear shorts that are "appropriate for a school setting."

The board added: "If a student wears an article of clothing that is not appropriate — pants that ride too low or muscle shirts, for example — then a conversation happens with the student and his/her parent or guardian. If possible, the student is asked to change into something more appropriate."

Critics on Facebook are calling on the school board to rethink the ban on short shorts.

Clare Prowse called it "absolutely appalling. This is Nova Scotia, not Saudi Arabia."

“The worst possible thing you can tell a girl is not to wear shorts because she is a distraction.” Oh, please I can think of many worse things. For starters, your mother is an idiot.

My daughters school has a simple rule...shorts can’t be higher than her fingertips with hands held down at her sides...problem solved. This mother is a boob...

We weren’t allowed to wear shorts at all when I was in school.

Yeah, I never did.

Please take this crap off of FR. People post it with no respect to women FReepers. They can go anywhere on the internet if they want to see this. FreeRepublic should not be one of those places.

>> I support school uniforms.

I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t. That’s the norm here in Asia even in university. Also a ban on jewelry.

Saves at lot of money, serves as a reminder to the kids of exactly why they are in school, avoids distractions such as this, reduces bullying and teasing of kids who come from poor families, reduces competition over who looks the best and eliminates it altogether over who has the best/most expensive stuff - at least at school.

Bring back the string skirt that young girls were required to don at puberty and shed at marriage, link to follow.

Appears to be a wide spread Euro thing thousands of years old still followed with modification in parts of Europe.

One could certainly argue that certain types of clothing can reasonably be banned in public schools...and private schools too.

I am a radical in this area. I worked a private school and sat on the uniform committee. I recommended that boys and girls have the same uniform; I suggested no shorts for the boys and no skirts for the girls. I wanted all the students to have long trousers, polo shirts, the same style shoes. A unisex uniform. That way girls couldn’t roll or hem their skirts up and boy’s couldn’t sag their shorts.

I also said the rule for hair should be the same for both boys and girls; If it touches the collar it should be tired back. Dyed hair must be a color that you could have possibly been born with. No purple, pink or blue high lights
No spikes, no gel,no glam, no sticking up. no bangs in eyes.

The students hated me - Some of the parents really liked me
