WASHINGTON (AP) — In an unprecedented move, the Pentagon is trying to transfer convicted national security leaker Pvt. Chelsea Manning to a civilian prison so she can get treatment for her gender disorder, defense officials said.
Manning, formerly named Bradley, was convicted of sending classified documents to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. The soldier has asked for hormone therapy and to be able to live as a woman.
The request was the first ever made by a transgender military inmate and set up a dilemma for the Defense Department: How to treat a soldier for a diagnosed disorder without violating long-standing military policy. Transgenders are not allowed to serve in the U.S. military and the Defense Department does not provide such treatment, but Manning can't be discharged from the service while serving his 35-year prison sentence.
Some officials have said privately that keeping the soldier in a military prison and unable to have treatment could amount to cruel and unusual punishment.

This is ludicrous. The only intervention he should receive is psychotherapy; obviously, he has a lot of issues, which he is trying to quash by having the physical evidence of a significant portion of his identity physically removed.
Much of a person’s identity is tied up in his or her gender. When a person wants to be physically mutilated so as to appear superficially to be a person of the opposite gender, it is a sign of profound self-hatred. Such self-loathing cannot actually be treated by physical mutilation—it must be treated by behavioral therapy.
I am not convinced that Manning is worth treating, but if he *must* be treated, how about actually treating him? Does anyone think his self-hatred will disappear just because he is physically mutilated?
The mollycoddling of this guy knows no bounds. He’s a traitor, plain and simple, and should have been given the needle.
The only treatment he needs is a .357 lead injection to the forehead. That would solve all his problems, and a significant number of ours.
Sometimes I think I woke up in a parallel universe. I never thought I'd see the day where prisoners would be allowed to have sex changes at taxpayer expense.

What is the point of incarcerating a guy for 35 years with an eye to punishment and then bending over backward to make sure he is happy there? I’m scratching my head on that one.
Call me nutty, but I thought that when someone has a disorder, you treat them in order to RECOVER from the disorder, not succumb to it????
