3 ways America should be more like Canada
Daily Ticker ^ | 5/14/14 | Rick Newman

So for guidance on how to fix America, why not look north to Canada, where the mood is upbeat and life appears to be getting demonstrably better? The New York Times recently reported the Canadian middle class is now the world’s richest, surpassing the U.S. for the first time. In the 2014 “better life index” recently published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Canada outscored the United States in 9 of 11 categories, including education, safety and overall life satisfaction

This has got to be one of the dumbest articles I have ever read.

1) One of the biggest reasons Canada can afford it's $hitty national health plan is because it doesn't have to pay for a national defense. We do that for them. And yes, there health care is garbage. If you're sick, seriously sick, you get help fast. But try sitting for 12 hours on a weekend with a screaming infant on your lap, in a French only speaking ER because your child has an ear infection and your Dr. is nowhere to be found.

2) Immigration? Last time I checked, there wasn't much problem of illegal immigrants sneaking into Canada from the US. What issues do they have there?

3) "With far fewer lending excesses, Canada didn’t really have a housing bust or a credit crisis to recover from."

Are they kidding? I don't think the real estate market in Canada even lends itself to the type of crappy loans our government forced Fannie and Freddie to make in pursuit of the American Dream. Most of the real estate markets in Canada are set near major economic hubs so that people who own homes, actually have the jobs they need to pay for them. Duh...

What a load!

Everything you need to know about Canada:

It’s north of North Dakota.

Let’s all ask Mark Steyn about Freedom of Speech in Canada. There is NO SUCH THING! You are arrested and severely fined for speaking simple truths.

Basically, we need something like the USA right on our borders.

Yes, this is the one thing we can say. When Obama was elected, I said I never thought I’d see the day when Canada’s PM was to the right of the US President. But there you have it.

“””3 ways America should be more like Canada”””

1. More of that Maple Syrup.
2. Excellent big game hunting.
3. Much cooler climate. (ridiculous heat/humidity in the
south)

That’s about it.

I like Harper a lot.....And he does have to work within a lot of constraints imposed by previous Liberal governments, but he is a good man....Can’t say that about many national leaders these days.

Thanks. I have quite a few friends in Canada and none of them have ever extolled the reasons listed in this article as reasons why Canada is great. In fact, some don’t think it is great. (like the guy who chose to come to NY state to get a tonsilectomy because the “fast track” appointment their National Health set for them was 6 months down the road and his daughter could barely swallow.)

This notion that the US is garbage really gets my hackles up. Yes, Obama AND Congress blow. Yes, we have our problems. But if you travel out of the country - and I am fortunate enough to have done so - you will quickly realize how GREAT the US is. I have friends in the Military - been to some amazing places - all say the same exact thing.

/rant (which was not, in any way, directed at you.) Whew....I feel (a little) better.

The Mexicans don't want to learn French, so they stay here...

The money quote:

"In Canada, the banking system was not used as a means of channeling subsidized credit to a favored political constituency, so there was no need to tolerate instability."

Hmmmm. How to engage that in PC talk?

Redlined neighborhoods were redlined for a reason, and it was not racial, even if those demographics coincided.

Had the Government not forced the banks to make loans in those areas, there would have been far less need for any bailouts.

“Let’s all ask Mark Steyn about Freedom of Speech in Canada. There is NO SUCH THING! You are arrested and severely fined for speaking simple truths.”

Those truths you speak of are actually anything non-Politically Correct™.

You can speak out and voice opinions against conservatives, Christians, white people, etc.
Just don’t voice opinions against minorities, gays, muslims, etc. That would be Hate Speech©.
