If it were, GeronL, not a scorched stone of Ukraine's fine house would be standing. Ukraine is tempting Russia to sweep into the eastern oblasts.
Ukraine is not a threat to Russia, but NATO in Crimea or Ukraine would be a huge threat to Russia. Russia is protecting itself in the Black Sea, and it's tough to live on the frontier of a major power. Ask Mexico. That's just the way it is.
Why would it be a bigger threat to Russia to have NATO on it’s doorstep, then it would be a threat to the Ukraine having Russia on it’s doorstep?

Ukraine is just a bit player on the frontier between Russia and the EU, and is merely the venue and proxy for the real contenders. Ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO has expanded eastward to encompass frontier countries that once formed a buffer between Russia and Germany. That is a very real threat Russia, which is not going to allow the West to advance closer to its southern borders along the Black Sea. If the shoe was on the other foot, we would have invaded two months ago.
Look, I think that’s a reasoned response. I still don’t think the E.U. or the U.S. is as likely to invade and try to occupy parts of Russia.
Could I say the same about Russia in Mexico? Not hardly. Russia would be doing it’s best to destabilize the U. S. on it’s own soil.
I don’t see the E.U. or the U.S. desiring to do that to Russia.
The EU is intent of dominating Russia, first economically and then as logic dictates, militarily. The greatest threat to peace in the coming decade is the soon-to-be-unchecked bureaucratic monster in Brussels.
Nobody is more militaristic than a dominant European power, so keep your eyes on the EU. After Brussels takes control of the armed forces of its formerly-sovereign member nations, we'll see what a 21st Century fascist state looks like. There is a reason Brussels pressed EU and NATO expansion all the way to Russia's borders, and it has nothing to do with friendship and trade. Buffers help prevent wars from starting, and the old frontier buffers are gone.
I wouldn't be lulled into thinking that militarism is a thing of the past. Trade is as old as warfare; if trade could make great wars obsolete, it would have done so long ago. Things change, and they can turn on a dime. Human nature has not changed one bit.
I agree in part. We’ll see what Brussels governance bring forth. You may be right. No, it’s never been my contention that trade would stave off a war. Germany was getting fairly good trade prior to WWII. Didn’t stop them.
