Twenty-nine years. Thats how long minority leader Mitch McConnell, arguably the most powerful Republican in Washington, has represented Kentucky in the United States Senate, a record for that state.
As Senator McConnell seeks his sixth term, and a chance to become the majority leader of a GOP-controlled Senate, he is emphasizing that experience and position, first to fend off a tea party upstart in the May 20 GOP primary, then to beat back a Democratic challenger with whom he is tied in the polls.
But incumbency for McConnell is a two-edged sword, especially when according to a poll last year cockroaches are more popular than Congress. Americans views have mellowed only slightly since then.
McConnells opponents say he is at his most vulnerable now, when polls show more Kentucky voters disapprove of the job hes doing than approve. He is expected to win his primary contest handily, but come November a broader electorate might decide that three decades is enough. That would be a stinging blow, reminiscent of the defeat of former Senate minority leader Tom Daschle (D) of South Dakota in 2004.
McConnells incumbency is the big theme of the campaign, says Ryan Alessi, a political reporter for Time Warner Cables network in Louisville. Incumbency-bashing is plentiful in the campaign of Republican Matt Bevin, a businessman who has the support of outside tea party groups such as FreedomWorks but who trails McConnell badly in the polls by 32 points in a May NBC/Marist Poll of likely Republican voters.

I am not sure what is worse. If he looses to the Dem, then he goes to K-Street and becomes an Uber Lobbyist and can Fubar our lives from afar doing the work of the Crony-Capitalist, or have him limp on, weak and challenged by the new Turks that will align with Lee and Cruz and make his political life a headache if he makes it and retains his Majority Leader Status....

I’d prefer that he’d be out of a position of actual power within the government.
Agree, but looks like he is going to wipe out Bevin and lose the General. Really wish Bevin could pull this off.
The media never even mentions McConnell is a Democrat enabler. If Grimes wins they will spend the whole night on her thrilling populist victory.
How has Senator Mitch McConnell improved the situtation in 29 years? What are the prospects that more time for Mitch McConnell in the Senate will improve conditions, since they haven't improved in his prior 29 years?
If I were Matt Bevin I'd have an ad running on these big questions. Is Mitch going to improve things in the future, since he hasn't in the past. Don't waste your vote on more of the same.
I`d vote third party rather than him, if he was in my district. F-him!
Bevin should win...
Can any KY FReepers tell us if the “Ditch Mitch” signs that were all over the State, still up?
Bevin should win...

If he did that would truly be another Truman/Dewey outcome. But, anything can happen.
Last thing we need is this douchebag as Senate Majority leader.
