The public schools in Washington, D.C., spent $29,349 per pupil in the 2010-2011 school year, according to the latest data from National Center for Education Statistics, but in 2013 fully 83 percent of the eighth graders in these schools were not "proficient" in reading and 81 percent were not "proficient" in math.
In 2013, students nationwide took NAEP reading and math tests. When the NCES listed the scores of public-school eighth graders in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, D.C. came in last in both subjects.
D.C. eighth graders scored an average of 248 out of 500 in reading, and Mississippi finished next to last with an average of 253.
Only 17 percent of D.C. 8th graders rated "proficient" or better in reading.
The NCES database indicates that in the 2010-2011 school year, Washington, D.C. public schools spent a total of $29,349 per pupil, ranking No. 1 in spending per pupil among the 21 large cities in the TUDA.
Congress ought to give every family in Washington, D.C., a choice of whether or not they want a government school to spend this money on behalf of their children. The D.C. public school system should be required to provide every family in the district with school-age children with a voucher for each child that is worth every penny the district now spends per pupil in its public schools. Families should be able to use that voucher at any school they want, anywhere they want.

A high performing black student usually ends up getting a beat-down from the rest.That’s a big chunk of the terrible overall ratings of inner city schools.
This is a big reason why school choice is important. For those black parents, who don’t want to lose their kids to the streets, who want their kids to get a decent education, who want them out of those ghetto schools. Give the parents choices to send their children to schools where they will not be beaten down for acting white and trying to learn.
No gubbamint program is ever a failure. It’s just ‘underfunded’.
If I am not mistaken, parents in D.C. do have that option. The city sponsors numerous charter schools that a D.C. parent could choose from, if they so chose.
Charter schools are still government schools
There are so many flimflams running in the US now that they will only get sorted out with the total collapse of the Republic. The fiction that DC spends that much per student ON STUDENTS is a joke no one should be laughing at. Lying is the way our society is now shuffled along, shuffled along to the inevitable doom of liars.

So why do they insist black kids must go to schools with more whites in order to have a better education?
Both learn and a family bond is actually created.
Under a free enterprise system, if real choice were available, the good teachers would quit the D.C. schools, rent a small classroom of their own, charge $10,000 per student, teach between 10 to 20 students, and reap a reward of $100,000 to $200,000 per year. If the kids didn’t learn to read, the parents could move on to a better teacher.
Nor do the numbers above include private and parochial schools, or homeschooled kids. Adding it all up, I would not be surprised if regular DCPS have less than a 50% share of all k-12 students in the district.
The moral of the story is that failure is expensive. The average Catholic high school in DC is in the $12-17,000 range. A couple of the big names are in the mid-20's but only Georgetown Prep is over $30,000, and that barely over. I'm a little rusty on the numbers and don't feel like looking them up tonight, but iirc, the Catholic elementary schools are typically in the $3500-8,000 range, with most (I'd guess) toward the lower end of that range. The big name secular private schools are a bit higher. On average, however, DCPS is more expensive per capita than private schools, despite Sidwell, St. Albans, NCS, etc. pulling the average up.

Oh yes, but that's my point. There are good charter schools that a D.C. parent could send their child to, if they made the effort. My daughter worked in a D.C. charter school for a few years, and I visited her there often. A few times, I was even invited to speak at her school. I was always impressed by how attentive the students were, and how well the place was run. Also, as the article suggests, they had anything they wanted in terms of supplies, and the teachers, including my daughter, received grants to pursue advanced teaching degrees at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. So, again, my point is that the opportunities are there for any D.C. student who wants them, but they are not being taken advantage of.
Hire unemployed college grads... give them 2 students to teach - pay them $50,000 a year.
It’ll save $5,000 per student AND lower the unemployment rate among liberal arts majors...

PROBLEM IS, THEY WOULD USE IT TO BUY DRUGS....
Some of the biggest problems in ghetto schools just aren’t discussed properly.
How do you deal with a culture in which doing well in school is acting white?
How do you deal with all the gang crap going on?
How do you deal with all the baby mama stuff going on?
How do you deal with kids in high school reading at a 3rd grade level? How do you give them remedial help that they need? But then, how will they respond to help, if trying to do well in school is derided as acting white?
How do you deal with kids who want to drop out of school, and make big money dealing drugs or doing God knows what with gangs, instead of thinking about a better future for themselves?
It just seems to me, that we go in circles talking about problems in schools in the inner city. Liberals tell us we need to spend more money, get better teachers, build new buildings to replace old buildings which have fallen into disrepair. Some of these solutions can help, but, so many such plans over the decades have been implemented, and unfortunately, have failed. So what the heck do we do now???

Speaking of her, was she ever investigated for perjury? We learned that she couldn’t read cursive when she was asked, under oath, to read a letter out loud in court, which she said she had written. She clearly lied about having written that letter. What ever happened in that case?
Total welfare for teachers. These people are fraudulent. Sue for money. The revolution is coming. You cannot screw our children!!
The reason is obvious. I know older black teachers who say going back to segregation is the answer. Black teachers had respect and would discipline the students.
