Angry Conservative Birds Need to Flock Together
Townhall.com ^ | May 16, 2014 | Michael Reagan

Stop listening to so much conservative talk radio.

Take a break. Watch a cartoon. Go to a ballgame.

Do anything else for a while but think, talk or argue about politics.

Do what I do and listen to country music instead. I guarantee you won’t be so angry all the time.

That’s what I told a bunch of riled-up conservatives the other day when I ran into them at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

I think I really shocked them when I said I rarely listen to talk radio.

What? You don’t listen to Sean or Rush or Levin every day?

Nope. Nope. And nope. They’re all great radio guys, great conservatives.

But I used to work in conservative talk radio. I didn’t listen to talk radio every day then and still don’t for the same reason I bet most country musicians don’t listen to country radio.

Don’t get me wrong. Conservative talk radio is great. But all you hear are angry callers. The only people I hear enjoying themselves are the hosts.

But these days it can be dangerous for Republicans because all you hear is conservatives picking fights with each other over who they want to run for president in 2016.

It’s become a bitter internal Twitter debate between Tea Party conservatives, economic conservatives, social conservatives, libertarians, hawks, doves and who knows how many others.

Everybody else’s favorite conservative candidate for 2016 is branded as a loser, a part-time conservative, a pretender to the legacy of Ronald Reagan.

Rubio’s soft on immigration. Paul is a dove who supports moderates. Cruz is too rash and too radical to win.

The problem is too many conservatives are spending their days looking for the bad in each other instead of looking for the good. No wonder we have so many angry people in our party.

Remember what’s on my father’s gravestone? -- “I know in my heart that man is good.”

That’s something conservative Republicans should keep in mind this fall and especially in 2016.

All this factional infighting and ideological hair-splitting is dangerous for the future of the GOP -- if it has one after 2016.

Instead of knocking Rand Paul as an isolationist or a traitor to the Tea Party cause because he came out in support of a nominee picked by the party, give him a break.

And give him some credit for focusing on the most important prize at hand – putting the GOP back in charge of the U.S. Senate this fall.

The bottom line is we’re all conservatives. We’re not the enemy. The liberals are.

We need to end the intramural squabbling that is tearing the Republican Party’s Big Tent to shreds in the fight to prove who’s the purest conservative of them all.

For 2016 the GOP has to get its primary act together and conservatives of all factions have to come together to agree -- early on -- which horse they want to run in the White House Derby.

Otherwise, in two years we’ll be looking at a choice not between Hillary and the second coming of Ronald Reagan, but between Hillary and the second coming of Mitt Romney.

After something like that, the trust is over.

Rubio’s soft on immigration

Correction: He's for amnesty, and for me, that's a deal breaker.

I agree. Always vote for the more conservative of the two choices. If that leaves me crawling over broken glass to vote for Christie or Jeb, so be it.

I was listening to him in the car when he said that. I knocked my drink all over myself and drove him sitting in a puddle of Sprite.

He is right about the way conservatives knock each other down. If you’re looking for a pure 100% conservative that dog ain’t in this hunt. The prospective GOP presidential lineup is preferable to Hillary for sure but don’t give us a Jeb Bush or Chris Christie, or you’ll have another massive stay at home demonstration by conservatives.

If it is Christie or Jeb, I will vote for Hillary. As will many others.

When Boner puts amnesty on the house floor and passes the senate bill with democrat votes the republican party will die. On the spot. Dole McRomney cannot win.

There he goes parroting the liberal stereotype of talk radio and conservatives as if all we have to do in the world is be angry though there is plenty of reason to be. I fully understand the need to take a breather and step back from politics. I do myself when an election cycle is done but that doesn’t mean suddenly I’m ready for a kumbya moment because that is impossible. It is impossible to reconcile with a person who sees big government progressive programs as “the way forward” and someone who wants limited constitutional government. It is impossible to reconcile with a person who thinks using millions of illegals in the place of American unemployed is “the way forward”. It is impossible to reconcile with a person who thinks religious liberty and conservative values should be chained and limited with state edicts on hate speech and restrictions on freedom of association. It is impossible to reconcile with people who want to spend trillions fighting climate change and controlling the size of your vehicle and how much and what kind of energy you can use.

I’m done with GOP who call conservatives extremists when the only alien politics in this country is evident in the Democrat party. They are the usurpers of liberty and I will come together with anyone who respects the constitution in all its freedoms and guarantees but I will not ally myself with unprincipled corporatists whose are only different in a matter of degree from the leftists we fight.

We can not pretend this is not a war and though I believe we need to be smarter like Reagan in how we address it acquiesce and dilution is not the answer. Its because of that game of pretend that we have Barack Obama and have seen our liberties frittered away with abandon. He sold ‘hope and change’ we need to sell ‘Strength!’, ‘Independence!’, ‘Honor’, and ‘Liberty!’. I don’t understand the difficulty. These are universal things that resonate with everyone and when cast against the backdrop of a public that says resoundingly that they think government is too big and too intrusive and that they want to throw out the status quo what exactly is the problem?

Why is it that we have so many candidates that feel awkward making the case for liberty and constitutional governance that is the key to liberty?

If it is Christie or Jeb, I will vote Constitution Party or the best third party candidate on the ballot. I always vote for the most conservative candidate.

I love ya Michael but its time to root hog or die for the republican party. The RINO train is going down the same track as the Dem train its just going 55MPH instead of 100MPH. We need the right republicans in office not just any republican.

Do you remember the Romneybots demanding we vote for that northeast liberal? Right here on FR there was rabid support for a northeast progressive. We cannot defeat the progressives by voting for progressive republicans.

If the republicans nominate a progressive my mission is to defeat said progressive republican by as large a margin as possible. R or D, progressives are the enemy. The lesser of two evils is an evil lesser.
