WASHINGTON -- What will become of the nation's capital?
The huge West Antarctic ice sheet is slowly collapsing, and two groups of scientists say the melting is now an unstoppable event.
Melting ice will cause sea levels to rise higher than initially projected, which is cause for concern for D.C.-area scientists and local urban planners.
The rising seas will affect local treasures, including the Chesapeake Bay and the country's iconic monuments along the National Mall.

There are two types of ice in Antarctica. There are glaciers which are on land, and pack ice floating on the water. Some of the glaciers are resting on what would normally sea floor, so it gets a little confusing.
Suffice it to say the concern is with glacial melt, not with pack ice. There is some really good info on the wattsupwiththat web site, but in any case the process is very slow and a lot can happen in the next few centuries so it’s useless to get worked up like the media seems to think necessary.
No, no, no,....a fence doesn’t solve the problem. What about the melted ice that is already on our shores. We need a comprehensive plan and not just a force field.

In New Orleans, they deleted the name of George Washington school, because Washington owned slaves. The predominantly black school board didn’t want to honor a slaveholder.
So, they renamed the school after an African king, so as to bolster the self esteem of the black students.
