Haverford College commencement speaker lambastes students
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 05/18/2014 | Susan Snyder

In a surprising move, a commencement speaker at Haverford College on Sunday used the celebratory occasion to deliver a sharp rebuke to students who had mounted a campaign against another speaker who had been scheduled to appear but withdrew amid the controversy.

William G. Bowen, former president of Princeton and a nationally respected higher education leader, called the student protestors' approach both "immature" and "arrogant" and the subsequent withdrawal of Robert J. Birgeneau, former chancellor of the University of California Berkeley, a "defeat" for the Quaker college and its ideals

At Haverford, the controversy arose over Birgeneau's leadership during a 2011 incident in which UC Berkeley police used force on students protesting college costs. A group of more than 40 students and three Haverford professors - all Berkeley alums - objected to Birgeneau's appearance and receipt of an honorary degree, noting that many of them had participated in Occupy protests as well and wanted to stand in solidarity with Berkeley students.

Buncha whining Lefties.

Simple solution. Do away with commencement speakers altogether. That way, nobody is “offended” and the students will be at their keg parties all the sooner.

Good for the kids. Now we know they did the right thing.

As the saying goes....Respect is something you earn.

Time to do away with outside speakers??

"Free speech" -- to the left -- has always meant shouting down opposing viewpoints.

I don't know why they waste money on these commencement ceremonies anyway. Why not just mail a copy of the Communist Manifesto, Mein Kampf, or a Che' T-shirt (their choice) to each graduate with their diploma. It would be a lot cheaper.

I assure you, Haverford College can afford to waste money.

As a former resident of the Peoples Republic of Berkeley I know of at least 2 speakers who were literally shouted down, to the point where they gave up trying to speak. Jeane Kirkpatrick and Bibi Netanyahu. The fascist leftists are without doubt the most intolerant people I have had the displeasure of dealing with.

It’s not just the Fascist who are intolerant, but the majority of the American people too.

Colleges used to be a place for the intellectual elite, now most colleges are populated with below average students who should be vying for fast food jobs.

All great things created by great people are destroyed by mediocre people and replaced by mediocre things.

Or go with a couple colleges I know and have a dean or the president deliver the address.

With below average IQs. And they worm their way into our political, academic and religious institutions, where they do incalculable harm.

Are you sure you aren't making a distinction without a difference. Majorities of Americans voted for a fascist in the last two presidential elections, and I'd warrant that a dispassionate description of fascist policies describing America as the country to (purportedly) benefit from them, without labeling them as fascist, would garner majority support in an opinion poll of Americans.

Remember that as Lord Acton observed, "At all times sincere friends of freedom have been rare, and its triumphs have been due to minorities, that have prevailed by associating themselves with auxiliaries whose objects often differed from their own..."

General Leslie Groves, who headed the Manhattan Project was warned by subordinates that recruiting scientists from universities was akin to recruiting from the commie-sary. To which Groves replied, “Where am I supposed to find scientists if not at the universities?”

The intensity level seems to have risen, though some things never change.

All commencement addresses should be like the speech TV character Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen) gave at one of the Ivy League university a few years back. I read a transcript of it, and it was one of the funniest things I've ever come across. Picture someone addressing a bunch of college students/graduates and saying some of the things from that speech:

1. Cohen, who is British, considers the U.S. one of the greatest countries in the world (after Jamaica and Thailand).

2. He mentioned Lincoln as a great American historical figures but said his legacy is tarnished by the Town Car. LOL.

3. He spoke about the great futures the students faced, and said: "Sitting in front of me is probably the next Bill Gates, Donald Trump ... maybe even Ronald McDonald." LMAO.

When one has no valid argument with which to refute someone’s views, his only option is to silence those views.

“Shut up”, explained the leftist.

I cannot agree. On what basis do you make this claim?
