Patrick mental health issue could hurt Dewhurst

AUSTIN - The mental condition of state Sen. Dan Patrick, front-runner in the GOP runoff for lieutenant governor, became the key issue Friday in the already acrimonious race, as medical records leaked by opponents show he was hospitalized twice in the 1980s, once after a suicide attempt, and received treatment for severe depression and anxiety.

In a campaign marked by nasty rhetoric bordering on the bizarre, incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who is trailing Patrick, began openly feuding with Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, a former rival for Texas' No. 2 elective office, over the disclosures: Dewhurst ordered Patterson to stop the continued leaks, and Patterson refused.

Patrick accused Dewhurst of complicity in the leaks, but the Dewhurst campaign denied that. In a statement, Dewhurst said: "My heart goes out to Dan and his family for what they've endured while coping with his condition."

"He told a group of us a year ago about all this, and that he expected it might come out because this was going to be a really tough race," said JoAnn Fleming of Tyler, a tea-party activist and executive director of Grassroots America. "This is a really low-rent way for David Dewhurst to go about asking us to rehire him for his job. "

"Dirty" David Dewhurst ran a dirty campaign against Ted Cruz for & continues the mud-slinging against Patrick.

Seems Dewhurst just can't run on his achievements and has to run the type of campaign that disgust the voters.

I would vote for Charles Mason or the Mad Hatter before I would vote for “I-pushed-the-Texas-corporate-income-tax” Dewhurst.

I don’t think much of Dan Patrick, but I cannot stand Dewberry. I’m holding my nose and voting for Patrick, just to give Dewhurst the boot.

Sure, the Dems have this 30 yr old information but for Dewhurst & Patterson to throw it out there just shows the animosity they have for the outsider, Dan Patrick.

Just another dirty campaign for Dirty Dewhurst. Texas Republicans are ashamed of his nasty campaigns. He must be a closet Democrat, turning to the same sleazy tactics the DNC used the weekend before the presidential election when they dug up a 25 year old DUI against George Bush. Hr deserves to be beaten so soundly that he never runs for anything in Texas again.

That's just about how I feel as well.

Dan can really be full of himself, but Dewhurst really turned off by is dirty campaign against Ted Cruz.

Dan also tweets the Austin Republican Establishment who don't see him as one of them.

This. Dewhurst is the slimiest politician this side of Harry Reid. He must go. We'll deal with Dan Patrick's shortcomings next time.

This race will be decided by what the 30% of the primary voters that voted for
Staples/Patterson decide to do. Patterson seems to be throwing his support
behind Dewhurst so it may come down to what the Staples voters do.

I can’t find any current polling since the primary. However, Rice University
has this to say.
“At this point the outcome of the election is pretty much decided and the only
question is how large is Dan Patrick’s margin of victory going to be,” said
Mark Jones, chair of Rice University’s political science department.

I truly do not like either of these candidates!

Although I think Patrick may only be “slightly” more conservative than Dewhurst; Dewhurst HAS GOT TO GO!

I am absolutely through with all these establishment politicians - from city dog catcher to re-tread Presidential candidates! The answer to all of these people is, “NO MORE!”

It is more than time for experienced BUSINESS people to run our country, because the establishment people are only helping themselves!

I think most Texans are sick and tired of Dewberry.

Like PITN said, we’ll deal with Patrick’s shortcomings, next.

Yes he did. At the beginning of the campaign Ted Cruz was an underdog and not well known by the public. Sarah Palin endorsed him and people began to notice Ted Cruz. The primaries let to a runoff between Cruz and Dewhurst. This was still Dewhursts race to lose and he did it with great political ineptness. He dealt every dirty card from the bottom of the deck and then invented new cards. The people of Texas were angered and Dewhurst was demolished.

He is doing it again and is now political dead meat. Dewhurst needs Texas, Texas does not need him.

I certainly hope Dan has learned from his business experience!

He left a lot of vendors on the hook with his failed restaurant venture?

Here is who Conservative Republicans of Texas are supporting (I think this is Hotze’s group/PAC):

Lt Gov - Dan Patrick
AG - Ken Paxton
Ag Comm - Sid Miller
RR Comm - Ryan Sitton

I’m in agreement.
