Troops, tanks, trucks, artillery, and armored personnel carriers of China's military were seen heading to the Vietnamese border on May 16 and 17, according to photographs taken by by residents near the border.

Chinese netizens have been posting photographs of the large movement of the People's Liberation Army, many of them showing Chinese troops in full combat gear heading to the local train station in Chongzuo, along with military vehicles.

One netizen said the Chinese military was taking the train from the Chongzuo station to Pingxiang City, which shares a 60-mile border with Vietnam. The netizen said that the Huu Nghi Border Gate to Vietnam is also now closed.

One of the photos, taken from inside a passenger train, shows the Chinese military preparing artillery for transport on a train track. Others show Chinese troops and military vehicles traveling along dirt roads.

The same was true in 1979 and the Soviets decided it was too much of a logistical problem to provide direct support. Now, as Russia, their available resources (personnel, bases, etc.....) are diminished.

Could be more about the Ukraine than Vietnam?

At any rate, I think Obama should go draw a red line and send out some more #hashtags...

Some of us have family and friends in the region. Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Sorry Mom, I have great animus against both countries. Having said that, may your friends and family remain safe. Amen.

As a large neighbor with an eye on access to resources, they should be. Whether they think Vietnam is a good reason for confrontation is another story. I’m not convinced the Russians will decide it would be.

Why would the Chinese launch on the Viet Nam border? Viet Nam is ALREADY part of the hegemony.

1) Vietnam is a Russian ally, not a Chinese ally.

2) China wants Vietnam's off-shore oil.

3) China's biggest weakness is that their troops have no actual combat experience. Better to test them against a small adversary first, get combat experience, and find out where they need to improve.

That was decades ago when Vietnam had a battle tested army and before China changed its doctrine and upgraded its military with high tech . China would stomp them today if they want to.

China kept trying to goad them into large engagements. Don’t know why they thought that would work, since they were just a few years removed from conflict with us and generally avoided it as a rule.
