HOUSE GOP BILL WOULD ROLL BACK SCHOOL LUNCH RULES
A.P ^ | May 19, 2014 | MARY CLARE JALONICK

House Republicans are proposing to let some schools opt out of healthier school lunch and breakfast programs if they are losing money.

A GOP spending bill for agriculture and food programs released Monday would allow schools to apply for waivers if they have a net loss on school food programs for a six month period.

Yeah. Nothing better than those sliced peaches in that sugary syrup. They might as well let them get Pixy Stix.

How about just returning control of schools to the States??? Let State and local Boards of Education make all decisions.

Agree, it would be excellent to have some healthy choices in the pile of greasy salty junk kids usually get for lunch. Chobani is pretty good, though I go for organic.

Greasy, salty junk = fat kids = health problems = more obamacare and its strain on our wallets.

When my kids were wee ones turning their noses up at veggies, I took them to the grocery store, showed them the huge variety of veggies there. We started to try each veggie in alphabetical order, artichoke to zucchini. They had to try, but did not have to like each one. (WE barely got past artichoke because kids LOVED them.)

Both of my kids found many veggies they really truly like and have been eating them all their lives.

A creative cafeteria manager (a contradiction in terms?) might try a veggie-of-the-week program. And try very hard not to overcook the things into a gushy, tasteless mass that any kid would hate.

I taught a series of health classes here for “disadvantaged” people with chronic conditions and found that half of them wanted to learn about nutrition and were doing so. The other half did not want to stop feeding their kids TV dinners, potato chips, and other low-nutrition foods. They had zero concept of the connection with food and health.

provide good-tasting and healthy food for the students instead of dictating what they must serve.

What a novel idea. And an excellent one. If healthful food was well prepared, more kids would choose it.

When I was in grade school, the meals were always well prepared and good-tasting. I remember they saved all the leftover veggies to make soup on Fridays. It was good soup, too. Today they would make them throw all those veggies away.

Republicans should be running on getting rid of the Mooch’s crap lunch mandates.

A well balanced nutritious garbage can doesn’t do the kids any good. They won’t eat the crap!

“REPUBLICANS DON’T WANT OUR CHILDREN TO BE HEALTHY STARVE!!”

Cancelling or scaling back a program like that will always lose more votes than it gains.

Meanwhile...veterans are dying/commiting suicide while awaiting treatment; 35,000 illegal immigrants have been released from prison; IRS continues to plunder Conservatives; Bone-ner is fixing to throw the southern border wide open, military sexual assaults skyrocket...

And, the GOP wants to make it OK if kids don’t want to eat their vegetables.

Glad the GOP has their priorities straight.

Simply defunding the Dept of Agriculture and Dept of Education would be common sense.

Agreed.
