Cigarettes and e-cigarettes make MRSA harder to kill
Medical News Today ^ | Monday, May 19, 2014 12am PDT | David McNamee

The debate weighing up the relative harms and benefits of e-cigarettes continues. New evidence suggests that e-cigarettes boost the virulence of drug-resistant pathogens, according to researchers at the VA San Diego Healthcare System and the University of California, San Diego.

:snip:

Dr. Crotty Alexander and her team grew methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in culture. They found that exposing the MRSA to e-cigarette vapor - similar in concentration to e-cigarette products available on the market - increased the virulence of the bacteria, making it better able to establish infection in the body and cause more severe disease.

:snip:

The e-cigarette vapor caused alterations in the surface charge and biofilm formation of the MRSA, which provided greater resistance to attack from human cells and antibiotics.

The surface of the bacteria became more positively charged to avoid binding by the animicrobial peptides that are lethal to the pathogen. The bacterial biofilms also became thicker, making the MRSA less vulnerable to attack.

Another possible factor in the increased resistance of the MRSA was a change in pH, which jumped from 7.4 up to 8.4 when exposed to the e-cigarette vapor. This change in pH makes the environment very alkalotic, which stresses the MRSA cells and prompts activation of defense mechanisms.

:snip:

Although the e-cigarette vapor increased the resistance of this pathogen, which is potentially lethal to humans, the virulence of MRSA was even greater when exposed to conventional cigarette smoke.

The surface charge alterations in the bacteria were 10 times greater when exposed to conventional cigarette smoke, compared with e-cigarette vapor.

trouble in paradise? I"m very curious about this as I use glycerine and purified water and no other ingredients. I doubt glycerine is a culprit since it's used in so many products as is Pro-Glycol, which is a bacterialcide. So the questions I have are, what e-cig liquid did the researchers use (chinese??), can the MRSA-lending component be isolated and removed and is the effect more or the same whether using a cartomizer versus a tank?

Or not. They told us for fifty years that saturated fat would kill us, now it turns out they lied. Not that it matters. They’ll be telling us saturated fat will kill us for the next fifty years.

Mine turned plaid and then fell off. But that may have been because of Sally. She gets around.

I tried the e-cigs. They made me cough terribly! One puff, and total rejection by my lungs! Trying to cut down on my regular cigs.

Why did they not compare e-cig to pot from Colorado?

They want to tax e-cigs so they had to come up with something to make them “not healthy”. But, of course, regular cigs were much worse, but don’t forget E-CIGS WILL KILL YOU. Oh, my God! If you eat a cup of salt, THAT WILL KILL YOU! If you drink enough alcohol to actually poison your body at one sitting, THAT WILL KILL YOU.

I use e-cigs and don’t give a crap what they say.

they see legalized pot in colorado as a good thing.

the deal here is to demonize e-cigs, so they have to scare people.

The reason for this is that cigarettes are dry carbon based while ecig is water based. Your lungs balance the amount of moisture inside and when you take a puff from the ecig you have placed extra inside. The benifits of moisture is to allow you to cough the bad stuff out which is building in your lungs since regular ciggs dont help your lungs like ecig. cough I say and you will adjust to healthier lungs.

What happens is if they do anything to e-cig that humidifier in your sick kids room should be taxed as sin tax also. Vics rub on your chest is should also be tagged with a sin tax. Humidifiers are putting water vapor in your lungs ohh no.

State and federal government bureaucrats want to regulate e-cigarettes. So clever researchers who want continued grant money will give them what they want, even if it’s stretching the truth.

Are you using those e cigs from the gas station or convenience store....like Blu’s? I can understand your problem iif so. Please do yourself a favor and stop in to a good vaping store and get set up with an Ego setup or similar and puff away on waffle juice or strawberry custard. I don’t think you will be coughing. The flavors are superb! I have kicked a pack and a half a day habit over 40 years in one day! I have dropped my nicotine level in my vape from 18 to 6 and am now starting to buy zero nicotine. All since April 1! It is a MIRACLE! You can do it!
