Losing Oregon: Does the NRSC Vet Its Candidates?
redstate.com ^ | 5/19/14 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 05/19/2014 5:51:14 PM PDT by cotton1706

I think the NRSC would much prefer beating up conservatives in 2014 than win the Senate. The NRSC has spent so much time and money attacking conservatives and running smear and whisper campaigns about them, we now have another candidate they did not vet.

We have lost Oregon with Monica Wehby. She seemed to be a good candidate with a great ad that neutralized her pro-choice positions. She was impressive. In fact, with a mail in election, Monica Wehby is going to be the GOP’s nominee in Oregon.

But there is this 911 call from her husband back in 2007. Oh, he is ready for bygones and forgiveness and moving on, but it is here.

Wait . . . wait . . . wait, you say. That was 2007. This is old. She can be given a pass. There was a lot of melodrama there.

Except there is another 911 call. This one is from last year.

Monica Wehby’s boyfriend called 911 claiming she was stalking him. Sure, he regrets calling 911 now. I can see that ad. “I never should have called 911 to say Monica Wehby was stalking me.”

Meanwhile, the Democrats can just run that 911 tape over and over.

“I had a relationship with her and the relationship has ended, and she is very, very upset and angry,” Miller told the dispatcher. “She’s been coming to my workplace. She’s been phoning inappropriately to my employees.”

Oh yes, he mentions her name too.

The Democrats have to defend every seat they can and they absolutely will be able to defend Oregon now. The ads write themselves.

I don’t know anything about this but I am sick of every stupid thing being used to defeat candidates. Her boyfriend called and complained about her. OK.

NRSC, vetting?
Well, it was her turn in the rotation. Vetting is for people who give a damn.

I agree. But, Domestic Violence is a very serious offense these days. In most states, it comes under a "Zero Tolerance" type crime. It's not like she gave the bird to someone in the Super Market parking lot. This really is a big deal.

More trouble for Wehby, apparently she stalked her ex BF a little bit and he called the cops. She was also accused of harassing her ex-husband during their divorce. I can’t speak to the validity of the charges, but that isn’t really the point.

This is what can happen when you pluck some random unvetted person out of nowhere and run them for high office.

The RINO recruiters should at least start doing background checks. The same thing goes for the “tea party” side too, we could do with fewer Matt Bevins and more Joe McDaniels.

Anyhow, Wehby continues to look like an epic fail.t speak to the validity of the charges, but that isn

I’ll repeat myself once again: The GOP needs candidates, from local dog catcher all the way to POTUS to be savvy, competent, crafty, shrewd, smart.

Idiots like this one in OR, or like the Angle, Mourdock, Akin, O’Donnell, etc. need to be relegated to being door greeters or even better, hearded together in an old nuclear missile silo where they can do no damage. They do much, much damage to the “Republican” name, brand and movement.

Oregon has almost entirely mail-in elections , so the die has been cast here. Wehby is a pro-abortion, pro-same-sex-marriage RINO, and what little chance she had of winning the general likely has disappeared. Unless Conger pulls off a miraculous upset, I wouldn’t spend a dime on that Senate race; instead of donating to Wehby’s failure in the making, let’s support Julianne Ortman in Minnesota, a proven, experienced conservative who can send Stuart Smalley packing. http://julianne.mn/

“Oregon has almost entirely mail-in elections”

Oh, then how does that work regarding a specific date. Do they open them and count the votes today? Or do all mailings have to be received by today?

Right, I forgot that. So she probably has already won the primary so to speak. Oh well, it was a longshot race anyway.

“, let’s support Julianne Ortman in Minnesota”

Yes.

Votes must be received by 8:00 p.m. tonight. In addition to mailing in their votes, voters may deposit them in designated “drop-off locations,” so people who haven’t voted yet can drop them off today (since they wouldn’t arrive by 8:00 if they dropped them in the mail this morning).

“Tuesday 20 May 2014 - Primary. Polls close 8:00p MDT (0200 UTC) / 8:00p PDT (0300 UTC). Oregon votes by mail. Ballots must be in the hands of election workers or in an official drop-off location no later than 8 PM local time.”

Is Wehby not a case of the establishment picking an inexperience, unvetted candidate? This should be brought up to Rove at every opportunity.

Correct on both counts. Whether Rovian or Tea Partyist, people who promote candidates should make sure that they know what they’re getting. As you know, I have been vocal about the lack of vetting by Tea Oarty groups, who in many instances seem to prefer supporting an unknown candidate with no track record and, far too often, a shady background (and many are closet Paulistinians). Well, the GOPe makes the same mistake from time to time, plucking potential candidates out of obscurity for silly reasons (”Doctor!” “Female!” “Social “moderate!””), and they deserve to be slammed as well. We need our candidates to be vetted adequately, whether they be red-meat conservatives in safe districts or more moderate candidates in liberal-leaning districts.

Supporting proven conservative Jason Conger over Monica Wehby in OR should have been a no-brainer; unfortunately, sometimes it seems that Republicans have no brains.

I tell you, these TEA Party candidates are just such political neophytes that they can’t be trusted to run a proper camp...

What?

Oh.

Never mind.

The problem is that most people have a pretty high threshold for when they’ll dial 911.

If two men decided they needed to call 911, then the RPP (reasonable prudent person) is going to do the math.

The GOP - they don’t call it the stupid party for nothing.
