Should the Government Slap Tobacco-Style Regulations on Fatty Foods?
National Journal ^ | May 19, 2014 | Clara Ritger

If the government wants to make progress in lowering obesity rates, it needs to start regulating fatty foods much the way it does tobacco.

That's the recommendation from a pair of international health organizations pushing policies it says would answer the obesity epidemic.

Specifically, the groups recommend that the government control the way the food and beverage industry advertises, to ensure companies aren't implying unhealthy food is good for children and adults. Additionally, they advise governments to require statements on food packaging about how high or low the content of salt, saturated fat, and sugar is in relation to dietary guidelines. On a broader scale, the organizations call for a reversal of food policy, calling on taxes for unhealthy foods and subsidies for healthy ones.

Consumers International and World Obesity Federation are presenting the global framework this week to the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ultimately, the groups say governments should remove artificial trans fats from all food within five years of their guidelines being adopted.

Much of the policy would face a difficult, if not impossible, path to passage in the U.S. Congress, but the groups did have one suggestion that is already being put into place. The groups recommend that restaurants be required to post calorie information about their food—a requirement already being implemented in the U.S. as part of the Affordable Care Act.

Global deaths related to obesity have risen from 2.6 million in 2005 to 3.4 million in 2010, according to the organizations.

More than 1.4 billion adults are overweight and at risk of negative health consequences, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, according to 2008 statistics from the World Health Organization.

Fatty foods don’t cause obesity.

Carbs do.

Remember the Fed’s Food Pyramid that suggested everyone eat lots of pasta?

People did, and got fat.

A moderate amount of fat makes you feel full and tells your body to stop eating. Carbs give you a blood sugar spike, get stored, and make you crave another blood sugar hit.

Stop the madness!

Low saturated fat diets don’t curb heart disease risk or help you live longer

Date:

March 5, 2014

Source:

BMJ-British Medical Journal

Summary:

Diets low in saturated fat don’t curb heart disease risk or help you live longer, says a leading US cardiovascular research scientist. And current dietary advice to replace saturated fats with carbohydrates or omega 6-rich polyunsaturated fats is based on flawed and incomplete data from the 1950s, argues the author. Dietary guidelines should be urgently reviewed and the vilification of saturated fats stopped to save lives, he insists.

And I bet you thought the Moochelle school lunches were just going to be mandatory for public school kids......

Nope, now that the government has a financial stake in your health (see Obamacare), they are going to do whatever it takes to make sure you take good care of government property (that would be your body) and the Supreme Court has ruled they can essentially penalize you for doing (or even not doing)anything they decide.

“Should the Government Slap Tobacco-Style Regulations on Fatty Foods?

Uh...not just “no”, but “hell, no!”

We need the gubmint to get back inside the Constitution’s very small box and get the hell out of our lives.

***Much of the policy would face a difficult, if not impossible, path to passage in the U.S. Congress,...***

No problemo, kemosabe! The President will just issue another unconstitutional executive order. Or the FDA or some unelected, unaccountable, and faceless alphabet agency will issue their own regulations. Then send in their own SWAT teams to anyone who doesn't comply.

This is an excellent site to get the other side of the scientific debate (yes, there is a debate!) about cholesterol, fat and heart disease

Amen to the last two posts. I have neighbors who have been told by their doctor to eat high carb cereal to get their whole grain in the morning and one high carb banana a day. They drink only low fat milk and he does not like vegetables or fruit. He will not eat eggs in the morning for fear his cholesterol goes up because he believes that lie too so he is on meds for diabetes and the meds are not helping. He is getting worse. She has heart problems.

Exactly .... and the “obesity epidemic” in this country began with the advent of the ‘low-fat’ craze/era.

No. Make recommendations if they want but no laws.
Leave the final decision up to the consumer.

If they want to tax obesity causing foods, start with sugary foods, starchy foods, pretty much all carbs that aren’t fiber, including fruits. Then they can go onto the trans fats that have been pushed onto the American public. Leave saturated fats alone. For that matter, leave everyone alone, and leave their food alone. Government without limits is evil out of control.

To gaslight an entire society you have to get them to keep silent. You have to convince people that everyone sane believes what you do. Those other people? Oh, those are fringe voices, those are crazy and/or stupid. The good people are all with us. - Sarah A. Hoyt
