Prison system is failing America by Newt Gingrich and Van Jones
CNN ^ | 05/21/2014 | Newt Gingrich and Van Jones

Posted on 05/21/2014 2:11:25 PM PDT by Responsibility2nd

The numbers are arresting.

If Americans under correctional supervision counted as a city of their own, they would form the largest city in the United States after New York.

The number of people in prison, on parole or on probation, 6.9 million Americans, exceeds the populations of the second- and third-largest cities, Los Angeles and Chicago, combined. Or the size of the next four -- Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix and San Antonio -- put together.

Thirty-eight U.S. states are home to fewer people than live under the corrections system in this country. There are about as many people behind bars as live in Chicago. That's one in every 108 Americans. One in 35 are under some form of correctional supervision.

Among African Americans, the numbers are even more horrifying. According to the NAACP, one in three black males born in the United States today is likely to spend time in prison at some point in his life. That's compared with one in six Hispanic males or one in 25 white males.

one out of every 50 people are in jail???

thats pretty bad

I am for decriminalizing non-violent drug laws

You should not go to jail for using drugs you should go to rehab- the money comes from it being illegal

if Pot was legal it would go from being $200 an ounce to $5 an ounce overnight

and it is FAR LESS harmful than alcohol (from a FORMER pot smoker who knows what he is talking about- its been over 20 years)

If you build prisons, or have any of a number of lucrative contracts like food service, laundry, counciling, legal services etc... the goin’s good. On the flip side of the coin, watch any prison tv documentary and you’ll realize they are locked up for a reason.

Van Jones! The commie lovin Van Jones!?

What the hell is Newt doing paling around with that worthless waste of oxygen? Regardless of the merits, or lack thereof, of the articles premise, it loses credibility with Van Jones associated with it.

And no, I didn’t read it. I stopped when I read Van Jones.

He should sit on a park bench with the marxist and make another commercial. Then he and his wife can do a cartoon book about prisons.

How about simply turning prisons into productive places where prisoners earn their keep, instead of burdening the public with the costs? That should be first priority. After that, let them earn their degrees. These would all serve valid purposes for incarceration including rehab for some almost certainly.

Here in Indiana, they used to stamp out license plates but the new 3M flat aluminum sheet plates with digital overlay undercut the price so much the govt switched.

“On the flip side of the coin, watch any prison tv documentary and you’ll realize they are locked up for a reason.”

That’s true, but I think some of the things that go on in prison are tolerated by the prison industry in order to brutalize and alienate people. I don’t think it is a far stretch to suspect the prison industry might do certain things or not do certain things to achieve the highest recidivism rate possible.

The prison systems need updating so badly, not even funny. The productive portion of prisons should be turned, over at least in part, to the free market so they could compete. The market should be an important factor in what and how they produce. The cost of retooling would be much less than the total cost of the prison and could conceivably be recovered with profits they earn.

Now, I hear that's not the case in Colorado. That the illegal guys are still in business and doing quite well and prices are nominally lower for the illeagal stuff.

I don't think that Newt understands that the Great Big Giant Criminal Justice-Prison Machine pays great money if you're one of the "Good Guy" cogs in the machine.

Looked up a young guy who worked for me many years ago. 7 years ago, he was making $80,000+ as a state prison system GED school principal. Not bad at all...

The big-government/big-corporate prison/industrial complex has metastasized and requires more criminals!

Quick! Pass some more laws!

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.” ― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, 1957

I have said that for many years now. They could work for their keep and, simultaneously, learn the value of work. For many, I am betting, it would be a new experience.

Having them work could help pay for their sustenance and their housing and, also, give them experience and work skills to apply once they are out.

Newt lies down with a dog and gets up with fleas.

America's prison problem doesn't stem from a failure of correctional theory. It stems from a ubiquitous immorality and its subsequent venality that sends people to prison in the first place.

Van Jones is an admitted Communist. His worldview has brought about the incarceration or death of at least a million of his own people. Like Obama, he is satanically focused on power and revenge. Neither understands sin.

Newt does things like this, to show just what an amazing, objective being he is. Reminds me of some girls I knew in college. They thought that they were so superior, so wise, that they could associate with the worst kinds of people and come away untouched in their pristine brilliance.

Common sense commonly ignored. Instead of common sense and reasonable improvements, we get the usual governmental "conventional wisdom" that is stupid and the tyranny of the status quo. Government is inherently stupid and since laws and crime and courts belong within the government domain, we're "stuck on stupid."

But there should be an exception somewhere. Be nice to see a state try using these ideas and allow the free market help out. If just one state did this for awhile, I would bet a lot would follow.

Newt's laying down with marxist fleas like Pelosi, Van Jones and CNN clearly demonstrates his unstable political and moral values, his lack of clear-cut, steadfast principles plus some pretty desperate attempts to stay in the public eye and appear relevant.

Everything he does now is soul-selling. He should be shunned.
