NEW YORK (AP) — Petco said Tuesday that it will stop selling dog and cat treats made in China by the end of this year due to ongoing fears that the imported treats are making pets sick. Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration haven't been able to figure out why pets are getting ill from the treats since the agency began receiving reports of illnesses in 2007.

China will just sell the ingredients to someone else who will sell them.

But the Chinese assure us that Chinese pet treats are made from real Chinese.

Good grief. They’re still selling them? I’d assumed they’d stopped back when this story, and all those pet deaths, was first percolating, two or three years ago!

Never had much of an opinion of Petco one way or another, but this makes it a decidedly negative one.

I have a news flash. Pet Smart’s dog treats are almost all made in China. I recently went down the dog chew aisle and looked on the back of every bag. China, China, China. I finally gave up and left the store.

antiviral? wait. are they manufacturing antivirals in the same factories as treats?

All of these treats contain a packet of (whatever it is) that floats around in the bottom. Could these be leaking/leaching some (whatever it is) onto the treats?

2007 at least. The FDA entered into "negotiations" with China over it not that I quite understand what there is to negotiate about.

Unfortunately pets are the largely ignored canary in the coalmine and they'll have to seriously poison a lot of people in the USA before we wake up about it. They do have a history of poisoning people, usually in 3rd world countries where they aren't choosey about where food and medicine come from.

I don’t know if my sister buys dog-treats at PetCo or PetSmart or maybe somewhere else, but I just went and checked the three different bags of treats she’d gotten for her dog, out of curiosity. Two bags said made-in-USA and the third was from Canada.

My sister is generally pretty savvy on such things. Similarly, I avoid just about anything and everything labeled China.

My backyard.

Garlic is not hard to grow and doesn't take up tons of garden space.

I've been growing it for a few years now and always have enough to get me through the year.

I was amazed at how little news-media airplay one incident got a few years back, involving people being severely sickened/poisoned by vegetables from Mexico, I believe. Several deaths and many sicknesses. The news-media really didn’t seem all that bothered, and didn’t even cover it all that much. Certainly not with much if any alarm. But if this had happened in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s, the media would have raised holy hell! This is the kind of thing they used to go totally ballistic over.

However, with Obama the new prezzie, and all the lib world under a blanket of contentment, the whole issue seemed deliberately and consciously downplayed by the media.

We've had a particularly good year for morels and I've had the food dehydrator going almost constantly for nearly two weeks.

I also started an asparagus bed last spring which I expanded this spring. I've also got Egyptian walking onions that grow every year. Looks like I can also count on the New Zealand spinach to come up every year too.

FDA must be stupid if this is true. I figured it out years ago. That's why my dog is still alive.

Maybe the one that wiped out the Florida tomato crop that year as we waited two weeks for news that they came from Mexico.

"Meanwhile... where does your garlic come from?"

Exactly.

80% of the garlic consumed in the US comes from China although The Garlic Capital Of The World is in Gilroy, California.

Additionally, most of the (made from 100% fruit juice) juice contains about 80% apple juice that also comes from China....yup, apple juice is what's in most of the juices.
