Earlier this month Stanford University announced that its endowment would divest itself of any investments in companies "whose principal business is coal." It was, they said, a principled move reflecting their concerns about global warming. Stanford's timing was auspiciously contemporaneous with the release of the White House's new 800+ page global warming report, Climate Change Impacts In The United States.

The people really pushing the anti-”fossil” fuel brigade don’t want the hoi paloi to use ANY energy.
The driving motivation for elitists is for there to be more difference between them and the masses. There’s never enough, and when they can’t achieve a higher living standard for themselves, they destroy the living standard of everyone else.
Story in WSJ last week, the high sulfur coal that is mined here in Indiana (and can’t be used because of our EPA rules) is barged down the Mississippi, and freighted across the Atlantic to Germany.
Where it’s burned for electric power. And even with the long boat rides it’s still 20% cheaper than the stuff they mine domestically.
Maybe we’ll divest ourselves of these schools that are no longer institutions of higher learning. How do you like them apples, Stanford?
I almost wonder if China isn’t behind the push against using coal in the US. They probably have hopes of buying up all that coal for their use.

Yup, that’s why if you sit out on the Ohio River in, say, Louisville, you’ll see coal barges going in both directions. Hi sulpher coal for export downstream, low sulpher coal for energy production upstream.
Candles made of paraffin wax which is made from petroleum, fossil fuel. You can bet they would light their homes thusly, proudly, ignorantly in solidarity, to show their greeniness.
AND- you only get to drive that car between 60 & 80 or so miles.
Try going on a cross country vacation, friend. You will get some distance, but you will soon find yourself stranded. Make sure your towing insurance will take you farther than 20 miles.
Keep in mind that a couple a weeks ago SCOTUS upheld EPA's cross state regulations which dealt with sulfur and mercury.
And it is not just coal, but also petroleum coke which is burned like coal at power plants and cement kilns. Playing out now is the issue of that big pile of pet coke in Detroit which is owned by the Koch Brothers for export. This is pet coke from refining tar sands oil. All refineries generate pet coke which is the left overs of the process but the bitumen(tar sands oil) produces much more of it.
I'm sure the coal companies are shaking. It won't be long before these self-righteous DBs will have divested their entire portfolio (As if it had some significance to the outside world).
If they are holding up this place as an institute of higher learning,they better rethink this a little. I know very little about Stanford,but if this is an example of their thinking,I would want no part of it.
