With NY’s looming minimum wage increases plus the added costs from PelosiCare, I know of at least 3 businesses there that are liquidating assets with the plan to be closed by the end of summer. The small business where I’m working is also going to be closed, likely in the next month.

The liberals would comment: Good, these were marginal businesses anyway. And it is true, all four are marginal profit makers. The increases in minimum wage and PelosiCare have eaten entirely the profits of the business owners, and they are shutting down. All four businesses gross well over a million dollars a year, pump at least a combined million dollars in local services, and pay millions in wages to their combined worker base.

I know our shutdown is killing two other small businesses, and from the ones I know in NY, they also have other businesses dependent upon their survival. All told, a little over 85 people are losing their jobs.

Meanwhile, liberals continue to live in their fantasy world that everything is JUST FINE.

To be sure, the Bay Area economy is booming, but minimum-wage opponents would nonetheless have us believe that mandating the payment of close to $11 an hour must cause job loss at least in fast-food joints and Chinatown’s kitchens.

Yet another in a long, long line of spectacularly bad comparisons. $11 an hour in the hyper-expensive climes of San Francisco is rather different than $11 an hour at a small business in Dubuque, Iowa.

There are a number of “economists” that went to ivy league schools and thus did not learn anything about economics.

Quote of the day. Very good.

Arguments over the minimum wage ignore economic reality. What is money? Money is a medium of exchange. It’s a way of trading Big Mac’s for haircuts or gasoline. If a Big Mac sells for $3.50 and a haircut is $14, the a haircut is worth 4 Big Macs. If gasoline sells for $3.50 a gallon, then a gallon of gas is worth one Big Mac. The McDonalds employee doesn’t pay with Big Mac’s, they pay with dollars they got when they exchanged Big Mac’s with someone else.

Raise the minimum wage and the price of a Big Mac goes up. The exchange rate for a haircut or a gallon of gas doesn’t change. So gas goes up to the new price of a Big Mac and a hair cut goes up to 4 times the new price of a Big Mac. The person selling Big Mac’s hasn’t gained a thing. They have in fact lost because we have progressive tax rates so the more you make the higher percentage the government takes.

That is how Economics works in the real world.

Anyone been to Sams Club , Lowes etc etc lately. Notice all the self check-outs ? Add in the Obamacare mandates to increasing the minimum wage and we’ll soon have 30% unemployed. Incidentally Germany the most successful economy in Europe has no minimum wage and low unemployment - France with raging unemployment, well over 10%, has a minimum wage of $13/hour ( for comparative purposes also add in 6 weeks vacation a year) . Entirely coincidental I’m sure.

It helps to remember that “boost” is also ghettospeak for “steal”.

The standard argument — really, the only argument — against raising the minimum wage is that it will lead to job loss.

no--it is not the only argument...

(counter argument)

“The standard argument — really, the only argument — for the First Amendment is so that politicians and their supporters can engage in political speech.”

I wonder if they could discern the fallacy in that argument?

All discussions about the “minimum wage” are stupid. The government does not have the right to set any minimum wage.

Rediculous conclusions. Show me one single company, besides the government, that said, “the cost of labor is rising, let’s hire a bunch more people.”

Why do liberals never respond to this argument: Small, insignificant increases in the minimum wage, like the kind the left constantly champions, don’t relieve poverty, so why not just raise the wage to something that truly will, like $500 an hour?

The simple truth is that liberals require poverty for their party to survive. Ending it would make them irrelevant. So they engage in periodic symbolic concern with the poor, all the while enjoying their Cadillac lifestyle they know can never be a reality to those enjoying their phony largesse of the minimum wage.

The standard argument — really, the only argument — against raising the minimum wage is that it will lead to job loss. The argument is beloved by die-hard opponents of raising the wage because it provides them with a veneer, however flimsy, of concern about the welfare of the working poor.
The standard argument — really, the only argument — for raising the "minimum wage" is that the demand for labor is perfectly inelastic, and therefore employers will pay more if they are told they must in order to retain their least-valuable employees. The argument is beloved by die-hard proponents of raising the wage because it provides them with a veneer, however flimsy, of concern for the public. The assumption that "money doesn’t matter when someone else is paying” is obviously attractive to those who take for granted the existence of “someone else” who can and will pay any price to retain low-productivity employees, and even hire more of them. But it is such a fantastic idea that no intelligent person could possibly take it seriously if they actually thought it through.
