The City plans to attack economic segregation in its affordable housing plan placing the poor in middle-class neighborhoods and the more affluent in high-poverty spots.
Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Vicki Been said the plan to build 80,000 new affordable apartments and preserve 120,000 units would create a more diverse city.
We really have to make economic diversity a cornerstone of that plan, she said at a City Council budget hearing Wednesday.
That means that in some neighborhoods that have mostly middle or upper-income housing, that we would need to put affordable housing at the very lowest income, she said.
But in some communities where we have a great deal of poverty . . . we would try to bring more moderate (-income housing) into those neighborhoods, to try to achieve the kind of diversity that we want, Been said.
De Blasios executive budget boosted the housing departments capital cash to $3.1 billion, up from $1.9 billion in his January preliminary budget, to help pay for the ambitious proposal.

I’ve seen entire NYC neighborhoods decimated when the hood came to it. Wilhelm really defines stupid. NYC deserves what it gets by electing this socialist clown.
Yep!
Must have happened to Hauser Street after the Jeffersons moved in. Ironically, it was the Jeffersons who "Moved on Up."
I wonder if the author of this plan, Vicki Been shown above plans to have any hoodrats move in next to her, or is the plan just for the little people to be forced to associate with the lower elements of society?
These idiots have tried these schemes for more than fifty years and they never work. All they will achieve is creating more ghettos.
They don’t seem to understand or care about the concept of “tax base”.
I’ve seen that in democRat-run municipalities locally. They have a declining tax base so they raise taxes on the remaining people and drive them out as well.
Freedom means that some people might choose something the left doesn’t approve of, and we can’t have that.
I don’t get the logic behind this.
Do they think that by putting the urban poor next to successful middle class people that the success will rub off?
Or is it that they want to ruin the quality of life for the successful?
A bit of both? Either way its a crazy idea.
No way would I put my family through that. It w/b “see ya later”.
RUINING THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE SUCCESSFUL IS THE PRIMARY DRIVING MOTIVATION FOR LEFTISTS
In addition to the crime and other middle-class flight, it seems to me that it is not necessarily a benefit to kids moved into an area they actually can’t afford.
Imagine as a kid watching your friends or potential friends enjoying the perks of a higher standard of living. Their bikes are cooler, they go to summer camp, they take vacations to Disney World, they have electronics out the wazoo. I have counseled families to avoid living in an area they really can’t afford because they can’t “keep up with the Joneses”. It’s a recipe for resentment and envy, especially given the tendency to envy rather than emulate.
Better is to stop justifying dysfunctional behavior and attitudes and start creating good role models among their current neighbors. Once up-and-coming neighborhoods had good role models from their own neighbors who were assimilating, learning English, working hard to getting an education. Now these people are derided as Uncle Toms or traitors to their culture. That’s the attitude we need to change and moving families into neighborhoods where they have little in common with the others won’t change that.
Manhattan is very different. It depends very specifically on US Government Debt, the role of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency, and above all, the Federal Reserve's ZIRP and pumping of the US stock market. I don't see NY City having any other economic advantages whatsoever.
Sick, Just Sick.
I think you’re right. Their policies never help the poor. If they really worked everyone w/b for them and by now their wouldn’t be any poor.
Instead they double and triple down on stupid. Has to be another reason and I think you nailed it.
Jerks.
(raising money for Romney? lol)
Jeb Bush's taking 60 illegals to live in his home. Bush says they don't mind sleeping 15 to a room... and he's got the space... Jeb’s going to show us he's willing to do what he wants to force us to do. I can admire that...
This should be the same... allow liberal elites the privilege of showing the rest of us how superior they are - we'll learn from their example...
Memphis tried this... what happened was spread crime out over the city in such a way that their police department became inadequate...
When crime’s centralized it’s easier to handle with fewer officers. When it’s spread out over a large metropolitan area it becomes almost impossible ... I believe the original research was reported in Scientific American...
I’ve seen several suburbs solve the “we need affordable housing for poor people” by building buildings and small neighborhoods for 55+. It is government subsidized housing for old people on limited incomes. Neighbors approve because it looks like you’re helping old people, while old folks on limited incomes don’t fill the schools or generate crime.
Move them to Bloomberg’s home.
Charles B. Rangel will not like his voters being moved
Insanity.
