Yearbook controversy: Mesa HS dedicates 2 pages to teen parents

MESA, Ariz. -

The two page spread documents the experiences of a few graduating students who are pregnant and have children.

Austin Contreras is on the yearbook staff.

"Student parents don't have time to go to homecoming and do all that because they have a kid, so they don't really get to be seen on the yearbook, so we thought it would be a good idea to put them on the page where they could be seen," said Contreras.

"It shouldn't be meant for this type of crowd," said a student.

"I just felt like it wasn't appropriate," said another student.

"I don't think that they should be put down or criticized for going to school and raising their kids," said a student.

School officials are not saying much, but the spread has sparked a serious conversation.

"Teens can receive a lot of judgment from the public, it can be from strangers, or even their own family members. When they don't have that support, the results can be detrimental," said

Ashley Butler is with teen pregnancy outreach services, a group that works with teen mothers.

"The stats for teens completing their education when they become pregnant are very low," said Ashley Butler.

"I think something like this is great to show that it can be done, it is not the end of the world. If they have the support, and the education, they can continue, and it is even more important now that they have a child that they are responsible for," said Butler.

statement, the district says; "Yearbooks are an opportunity to commemorate students' school activities and achievements. The material presented reflects choices made outside of the school environment. The feedback received about the subject matter will help refine the judgement used when determining content in future yearbooks."

It’s inappropriate.

They should be treated with equal weight as other students.

Next, they will have pages dedicated to all the students that have had abortions.

Maybe they should have had the decency to keep their legs closed and focused on their studies. I have a feeling we’ll be taking care of these as well.

They could have really done this well. They could have called it the “Pro Life” page. I love that these girls although got in trouble. They had their babies. Thank God for that.

When I taught in a mostly black central area HS, we had a year end party and picnic. All the girls brought their little children to school. I couldn’t believe the number of toddlers there were which probably out numbered the students.

Why is this a “controversy”?

My daughter was incensed when a teacher at her high school threw a baby shower for two pregnant students. She refused to buy them a gift as she knew the girls and knew that both of them got pregnant on purpose.

She felt that the shower would encourage other girls to do that same.

A teacher threw any showers for students? Did their parents approve of this?

Austin Contreras is on the yearbook staff.

Might Austin Contreras be an undeclared self-serving dad himself perhaps? Or his sister? a close friend?

Not a yearbook I would want any of my children to share.
Breeding can't ever be on the same level as academic achievement. Not ever. Not now.

Years ago, a girl NEVER thought of having sex out of wedlock, or in her teen years, because of the shame and embarrassment it would bring to her parents..her married father and mother, and also because these smart young women had a plan outlined for their future that included getting an education and then becoming employed. Marriage and children came after, in that order.

When there is no shame attached to a particular behavior, when the govt. and our politically correct society showers these pregnant high school girls with subsidies, when foolish young women think it's so cute to have a baby, and pretend to play house, when they should be concentrating on their education, and mapping out a plan for their future, and what it will take to get there. In some cultures, it's a generational way of life..tax payers take care of you and your baby, and you struggle for the rest of your life, because having a child and a chance at a decent lifestyle is a two parent job..that's one of the reasons marriage was instituted. Foolish girls and kids who don't have a chance in this world. I can only hope that the moral pendulum swings back again in this country to a time when morals were important and love of God, our parents and respect for ourselves was the norm, rather than the exception.

Because some people think having children in high school shouldn’t be glorified?
