It's "just the tip of the iceberg." That's what a congressional committee chairman investigating allegations of delayed care and cooked books at Veterans Affairs health care facilities told CNN.
Rep. Jeff Miller, a Florida Republican who heads the House Veterans Affairs panel, on Thursday forecast more serious developments in the national program serving nearly 9 million veterans.
"We've received some information and some tips that will make what has already come look like kindergarten stuff," he told CNN's New Day.
The controversy has broadened since CNN first reported six months ago on allegations of alarming shortcomings within the VA medical care system that potentially have had deadly consequences in dozens of cases.
Developments taking shape on Thursday included a meeting later in the day between embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki and the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, Richard Durbin of Illinois.
Shinseki, who has come under pressure from some quarters to step down, told reporters after the meeting that he has not offered his resignation to President Barack Obama, who is standing by him.
He later issued a statement to the nation's veterans stressing that the entire matter is the subject of an internal review and an independent investigation.
"The reports of veterans' negative experiences while seeking VA care are of great personal concern to me" and promised action if "any allegations under review are substantiated," he said.
"As we approach our observance of Memorial Day and its special significance to our nation, VA is re-doubling its efforts, with integrity and compassion, to earn your trust," he added.

VA ping.
The VA is full of vets top to bottom and it sounds like a lot of them have been very unhappy. Sounds like there may be whistleblowers galore.
I suspect that this huge scandal and controversy is coming from the White House, who will eventually announce vast sweeping reform and overhaul of the VA to fix the crisis.
It will be an Obamacare solution to the VA “problem” Obama’s been aware of since at least 2008.
Get rid of the VA and put every veteran and their families in Obamacare.
Yeah, no one sees this coming.
You mean CNN is on top of this? What a joke. If there objective is redemption, it is laughable.
Makes you wonder if the democrats sabotaged this on purpose
On the bigger picture ...
The reason Obama and his minions have ignored the VA problem that existed even in 2008 is becoming more obvious and is two-fold. One they hate the military, and two: If all these single-payer issues and wait-lists in the VA came to light in 2010 and 2011, The Demorats would never have gotten Obamacare passed.
MSM allowed this and assisted of course.
They should look at party affiliation correlation to delays. Who wants to bet that the IRS and VA were ordered into a war against conservatives and Republicans.
This is another outrage!
The few people at the VA who actually seem to care are far outnumbered by the vast legions of marginally-skilled clerical workers whose chief qualifications seem to be belligerence, stupidity, and pigmentation. At least that’s been my experience. I won’t be back.

Is there any truth to the vicious, vicious rumor that Obama only uses phrases in his teleprompter speeches that are approved favorites of the White House Focus Groups?
I’ve noticed how often a phase is repeated by Obama and his Lying Den Staff on a specific topic, and wondered if there is a separate WH Focus Group for each new topic that Obama reads about in the newspaper?
For example, on the topic of accountability of himself in his duties of his elected office, Obamas speeches always deflect an investigation AWAY from him: I will get to the BOTTOM of this! is a common favorite soundbite of the WH Focus Group.
Rarely does Obama use Harry Trumans Ultimate Commander in Chief phrase: The Buck stops here.
Both Harry and Barry were Democrats, but look how much the Democrat Party has changed, and America is the worst for it - - - .
These must be tough times for a Democrat to claim Obama as his/her leader - - - .
Ping to 14.
I think it will have to be the Democrats alone who will soon have to “manage” Obama. One way or the other, the Democrats can clip his wings.
There is an election or two coming up and Hillary is apt to be in one of them. This means tables are turning on the cool cat act in the White House.
When his actions start to step on her chances, the Dems themselves can shut him down, or show him the door early.
We, the People, are voters who,
Vote as we see fit, for good or bad.
Now comes the Division,
And Polarization too.
Thus we are ‘near conquered,
As Divided we stand,
One on THE Rock,
The other on sand - - - -
Now that the story is out, CNN is scratching faster than a cat trying to cover a turd.
