U.S. senators send letters to Goodell
ESPN ^ | 5/22/14 | Darren Rovell

Letters signed by 50 U.S. senators urging the league to change the Washington Redskins name were sent on Thursday to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

The senators draw a parallel between the NBA's no-tolerance policy regarding the racist comments made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and asks the NFL to act similarly.

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has been steadfast in his stance that he will not change his team's nickname. "Today, we urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports," the senators write. "It's time for the NFL to endorse a name change for the Washington, D.C. football team.

"The despicable comments made by Mr. Sterling have opened up a national conversation about race relations. We believe this conversation is an opportunity for the NFL to take action to remove the racial slur from the name of one of its marquee franchises."

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has opposed the name change, and his team has launched its own public relations campaign issuing comments by Native Americans that continue to support the name.

The NFL has stood behind Snyder and issued its own response Thursday to the news of the senators' letter.

"We have not received the letter, but the NFL has long demonstrated a commitment to progressive leadership on issues of diversity and inclusion, both on and off the field," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. "The intent of the team's name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image. The team name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently."

Video of Dingy Harry pomus, holier-than-thou ponificating at link. Interesting how Reid cited how the old Baltimore Bullets, soon after moving to DC changes their name to the WIZARDS, to disassociate themselves from any gun reference, as that put a dent in crime in DC. Anyone consider a possible association with Imperial Wizards? Years ago Dennis Paeger interviewed some "Native American" activist on this very subject. He asked Paeger how he woud like it if there were a team called the Texas Jewboys? Mr. Praeger responded by saying he would be overjoyed because finally after 5000 years someone would be cheering for us ;)

Dan Snyder is too much of a metrosexual wimp to do what a real man would do. Keep the name Redskins and reinstate the “Fight for Old Dixie!” lyric to “Hail to the Redskins”. That would really make the PC crowd head’s explode.

And as a side note, the quaint little village of Nyack, NY is a rather “progressive”, diverse, inclusive, touchy-feely kind of town. They take great pride in being the first town in the Hudson Valley to elect an openly homosexual mayor, it’s much like a San Francisco-on-the-Hudson. But their high school football team is called the *gasp* INDIANS, and no one has yet called on the school to change the name.

“how he would like it if there were a team called the Texas Jewboys?”

I remember a band by that name: Kinky Friedman & The Texas Jewboys

All the senators have to do....is make a law that says no Indian name be used....for that matter, even for state’s names as well. And we can end this entire mess once and for all.

But they won’t do that. So, it’s just a game...more or less.

Yes, my sentiment, too (nice logo, BTW). But of course, O’Bama and his sons would say it’s disrespectful of their Irish ancestors.

Both of our dimwit democrat senators in NM jumped on board with this. Like there’s nothing more important to worry about right now than the name of a sports team. I will be calling them in a few hours, not that they care.

Let’s see - Delaware, Indiana, North and South Dakota, Michigan, Utah(Utes) and Ohio are in for name changes.

Don’t we have bigger problems in this country than to worry about changing the name of some stupid football team?

What a screwed up country we have become.

I am so glad we have full employment, gas is back under $3.00 all of our returning veterans are receiving good health care, we started enforcing our on the book immigration laws and no Americans are dying at the hands of islamists anywhere in the world,
Gives us time to deal with really important things like celebrating a pervert football player being drafted and changing the Redskins name.

Veterans are DYING, gas and food prices are SOARING, jobs are DISAPPEARING, respect for America overseas is DETERIORATING, but Democrats in the Senate are more concerned about the homosexual-obsessed NFL’s team names.

Priorities.

This has nothing to do with the Redskins. It is about motivating the Dem base by pulling the race card. It is also a distraction from the very real scandals plaguing Obama. The MSM and talking heads will jump on this for all it is worth.

You forgot Oklahoma. The state’s name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning “red people.”

The US no longer deals with big problems, but instead deals with made up easy to deal with problems.

So did Bill Nelson (Djimmocrat-FL), Moron, as if he did the Seminole tribes down here a big favor.

“Where did you find the list? Di either of Maine’s senators sign it?”

Angus King did send a letter, Susan Collins is a republican. Most articles note that 50 Dem senators sent letters. This one did not. Angus is an independent but caucuses with the dems.
