Arby's airing 13-hour commercial

If your idea of a perfect weekend is staring at your TV and salivating while watching a beef brisket being smoked, you should be in Duluth, Minn., Saturday.

Starting at 2 p.m. ET and wrapping up at 3 a.m. ET on Sunday, local TV station My9 will be airing a non-stop commercial for Arby's smokehouse brisket sandwich.

“As you’d expect, the idea around airing a commercial for 13 hours required that we cast a pretty wide net,” Arby’s spokesman Jeff Baker told the Duluth News Tribune. “There were very few folks who could do this the right way, and we had the most confidence in working with My9 and their ability to be quite flexible with what I’m certain was a very challenging request.”

The paper says that when the commercial passes the one-hour mark, it will have exceeded the Guinness World Record for longest TV commercial currently held by Nivea.

Why 13 hours?

According to Arby’s, that`s the amount of time its beef brisket is smoked with hickory wood in a Texas smokehouse before being deemed ready for the sandwich.

The company says the sandwich, offered for the first time last year, was the most successful new product in its 50-year history.

No thanks. I’d rather watch an Andy Griffith show marathon instead.

Why just Duluth?

Sounds interesting.

Do we get appropriate music, like with a Christmas Yule Log broadcast?

Can't watch it—no TV—but would love to try it. Arby’s lost is pazzaz when it took out the big piece of beef rotating in a special case out of its store. I wonder why they are still in business.

Most smoked brisket is cooked for a minimum of 6 hrs. 13 might be a bit too long.

I wish they would go back to something that resembled beef and just do what they once did so well - give us something edible - a roast beef sandwich - to put their sauces on.

And...if they had any brains, both their BBQ sauce and Horsey Sauce would be at eye level in any supermarket they choose.

Saying there is a right way to air a 13 hour commercial is like saying there is a right way to self-immolate.

You might as well spend the time smoking your own brisket.

Most smoked brisket is wrapped in foil after about two hours. This eliminates the “stall” where the meat stops cooking for about 6 hours due to moisture evaporation. If you don’t wrap it, you need at least 10 hours.
