During the George W. Bush Administration, progressives were hailing the Veterans Affairs health system as a model health organization. Now that it's come out that the VA suffers from the same bureaucratic nightmares that all socialized-style systems do, progressives want to roll back the clock on their rhetoric.
Luckily, Nancy Pelosi has found the real person whose fault it is: George W. Bush. As Joel Gehrke reports:
Pelosi took a shot at Bush while saying that the scandal is a high priority for Obama. "He sees the ramifications of some seeds that were sown a long time ago, when you have two wars over a long period of time and many, many more, millions more veterans," she told reporters during her Thursday press briefing. "And so, I know that he is upset about it."
The Democratic leader never mentioned Bush by name, but she alluded to him early and often in the press briefing.
"Maybe when we go into war, we should be thinking about its consequences and its ramifications," Pelosi said while discussing the scandal. "You would think that would be a given, but maybe it wasn't. And so, we go in a war in Afghanistan, leave Afghanistan for Iraq with unfinished business in Afghanistan. Ten years later, we have all of these additional veterans. In the past five years, two million more veterans needing benefits from the VA. That's a huge, huge increase."
She suggested that Obamacare might hold the key to solving the problem.
So: during the Bush years, progressives loved the VA system and suggested its centralized and socialized nature were what held the key to fixing the rest of the American health system. Now that it's politically toxic, they've moved on - blaming George W. Bush for its problems and suggesting that their shiny new toy, Obamacare, is the solution.
True. It has now come to a well deserved head. And, Obama owns it - ironic justice. Yet, I still will say to liberals, "Obama lied, veterans died".
What he meant is that the VA is highly unionized. As in our public education system this means efforts center on what is good for the staff rather than what is good for the veterans.
Yes, but the question is - will their deaths matter? Will THIS be the outrage that wakes the American people, to force their “representatives” to act to stop the treasonous enemies in our midst?
I doubt it.

Nobody listens to spooky old Pelosi she out lived her usefulness years ago.
Both parties? I suppose but refresh my recollection about which party advocates a VA type system for all of us? Which Party is it that protects incompetent, malicious public employees from being fired because they are owned by the unions? I mean, even if “he who is responsible for everything that Obama has failed to do” wanted to have “fixed” this what steps could “he who is responsible for everything that Obama has failed to do” have taken? Bring in private competition? Fire some of this non-fireable people?
Of all our citizens, why do veterans deserve second class health care?
Both parties have been aware of this issue since WWII & both parties have have only made it worse by allowing a further death grip of the public service unions around the throats of not only the Veterans, but everyone who has dealings with the gov.’t.
IMHO, both parties have only made it worse too. It does not matter who is in office or controls congress.
Her staff probably has a flowchart to deal with any issue. Personal responsibility and doing what’s right for the country isn’t on it.
Agreed, My dad died in a VA hospital and my memories are that it was the darkest, most depressing place ever. OTOH I have done some volunteer activities at our local VA and it has a modern appearance and a pretty good reputation. Privatization is the way to go.
Then she should have fixed it in during the past 8 years.
Is Pelosi having brain lapse problems?
