President Barack Obama is promising U.S. forces in Afghanistan that Americas longest war will come to a close at the end of the year.
The president made a surprise visit Sunday to Bagram Air Field to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday weekend with troops.
He says the war is at a pivotal moment, with Afghan forces taking over primary responsibility for the security of their country.

They just had a record crop of opium.Let the bribe money flow.
With Karzai turning his back by not meeting with him, I hope all our troops are taken out.
The US would be doing a humanitarian act by defoliating all of the poppy crops in Afghanistan — as we pull out.
Just get our troops the hell out of Afghanistan. The only thing we are accomplishing is getting our troops killed. One month after we leave, the tribes will be back to killing each other and their primitive lifestyle will continue.
November elections...those are in November
Years' End...typically Late December.
They will campaign on this as though it were somehow a victory. (Think..."al queda is on the run" for talking pointal equivalence, here)
After we bug out? One suspects, and fears, that Afghanistan might experience the very reciprocal of victory.
Should Putin send the thank-you bouquet to the White House or would you prefer to have them sent somewhere else?
If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight, even though the ruler forbid it; if fighting will not result is victory, then you must not fight, even at the rulers bidding.Obama had egg on his face when the positive results of the Fallujah surge (which he opposed as senator) were announced. Imagine a general that followed Sun Tzus maxim and did not let opportunities slip away, the least of which was to keep the ambassadors in Benghazi safe?

He's now going to do the same thing with Afghanistan, pull out, and declare himself the victor over the bodies of the dead.
No doubt the MSM will cheer him and continue to prop the fraud of frauds up.
On Memorial Day we honor the brave dead who helped keep us free. His being CIC might be the greatest slap in the face of history ever.
Shame on America.
I’m sure the AP would love the bouquet, poison gas and all.
We are pulling out of afghanistan in december, PERIOD!
If you like your Taliban, you can keep your Taliban. Period.
And then what?
I didn’t allude to Churchill’s warning to Chamberlain for nothing.
Should have just carpet bombed the hell out of that place and moved on ... no boots on the ground.
Tough to disagree with that.
Yeah, we’re leaving because they won’t sign a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to protect our troops from war crimes and other prosecution.
I’ve never heard of a war won in that fashion. I’m not saying it wasn’t needed, but I just haven’t heard of it.
There will be a round of killings in Afghanistan first after the administration outed the top CIA official there. Any Afghan remotely connected to him is as good as dead.
That acronym is so non-evocative of anything military as to give one the chills.
This surprise visit is in hopes of “showing” how he supports military. After all he has to do something with the VA scandal blowing up in his face.
And we are winning now? We went into Afghanistan because it was the stronghold of Al-Qaeda, the Al-Qaeda that brought down the Twin Towers. Our original goal was to punish the taliban/ Al-Qaeda (not to win a war) for killing 3000 Americans.
By the way, carpet bombing of German cities help win WWII.
In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns. We already have had these foes declare war on us. If they are not beaten, they will not stop. There was no need to make the war protracted, since we already knew who the enemy was and is.
The Art Of War 2:19
FTR, we did have boots on the ground in Germany in addition to the carpet bombing, which did not prevent the need for the aforementioned boots.
“when faced with a choice between war and dishonor, when one chooses dishonor then the result will still be war. “
War is more likely today than during the Cold War for the very reason you quoted.
Indeed. Meanwhile the princes and princesses in DC refuse to see it.
The aforementioned boots came after the carpet bombing made life for the aforementioned boots on the ground a little easier.
Our original goal in Afghanistan was punishment not conquest.
Then we had no goal in Afghanistan.
Except punishment for an atrocity committed on innocent American citizens.
If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it. If we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war.Fighting wars piecemeal has not worked since it was first tried after the end of WWII.
Enough, enough ... your circle logic is like calling Microsoft for help, round and round we go until you find yourself in a loop, and inescapable loop.
It is obvious we will never agree, nor will we change each others thoughts on the subject.
Nonetheless ... great discussion.
Have a great day. LOL!
The result will be the same.
"Every attempt to make war easy and safe will result in humiliation and disaster."
~William T. Sherman
What, war on our soil?
Ultimately, we’ll have saved no money and lost more honor.
See how Obama’s manipulating us into agreeing to his agenda?
I wouldn’t compare the Founding Fathers to Microsoft. Now the recent crop of US leaders, absolutely.
Didn't realize I had made that comparison?
That’s another one to remember. Certainly none of the jihadis are expecting to fight their war easily or safely, on their part never mind ours.
You didn’t; I just held that up as an example of how not all of the US leaders are equal.
BTW, Washington didn’t fight the War of Independence with the abominable rules of engagement our boys are currently saddled with.
The restrictive ROE did a lot to kill us in VN.
So much for waiting for the new guy, Karzai’s replacement, whoever that is. I guess minds were already made up before the election.
If I were a bank robber and the police said that effective January 1 2015 we would disband the police force, I think I would rob the bank January 2, 2015.
We won the war in Vietnam on the battlefield. We lost the Vietnam War in Washington DC courtesy of the Democrat Party. Nothing has changed. .
how many in our government and in world government have been corrupted by the money generated by those murderous crops?
if the agency wanted to put terrorism out of business by screwing up the heroin trade, they would have done so by now
His way of saying thank you, for their ultimate service, to dead veterans on Memorial Day. This man is totally amazing.
Clown Prince nobama’s photo-op trip costs many many millions. Just how many left-to-die-through-neglect Veterans could have been treated for that money? nobama is a degenerate, anti-Free-America poofer who despises Veterans.
If you can stop him, WTF are you waiting for?
Agreeing to it won’t help matters either.
You obviously know how to fix it, yet you won't.
