'The most extraordinary result in 100 years'

Nigel Farage tonight hailed Ukip's victory in the European elections as the most 'extraordinary result in British politics for 100 years'.

Support for Ukip has surged by more than 12 per cent, outstripping a more modest boost in votes for Labour, while the Lib Dems faced near-wipeout, with some calling for Nick Clegg to resign.

Mr Farage said he was 'proud' of the campaign which has seen him humiliate the Westminster parties, pushing Labour and the Tories into second and third.

As Ukip was triumphing in the UK, across the Channel France’s far-right National Front was on course for a massive victory in European elections tonight as the country swung behind its anti-immigration, anti-EU agenda.

Look at the results when London is separated from the rest of England, and the narrow margin in Wales...

Liberal Democrat 28930 3.95 0

Scotland

UK Independence Party 139687 10.46 1
Green 107805 8.07 0
Liberal Democrat 95076 7.12 0

Consider that in the British Parliament... England excluding London has 452 seats. London has 73, Scotland has 52, Wales 30, and N Ireland 18. (N Ireland releases count tomorrow) In England, The UKIP carried everything except London, and the two Northern constituencies on the Scotland Border. Labour only beat UKIP by less than 4400 votes. It is an earthquake.

This might rank up there with the Battle of Tours (732) and the Battle of Vienna (1683) for fights which saved Europe.

Unfortunately, this current battle is not yet over. Here's what I expect to see in the near future:

1. The establishment parties will pretend to adopt some of the UKIP and National Front positions. This will be partially successful.

2. A smear campaign will start against the UKIP and National Front leadership. People will turn up who claim that they heard Farage express an admiration for Hitler. This also will be partially successful.

3. A smear campaign will start against the UKIP and National Front parties themselves. They will be called racists and fascists. Kooky members will be interviewed to prove the point. With the mainstream media behind the smear, this will be very successful.

Are people here pro-National Front?

Not necessarily. The National Front is no knight in shining armor. It's just that all the alternatives are so distasteful.

That would be extraordinary. Today’s Tory party deserves to shrivel on the vine

Ping me when they kick out all the muslims.

Well that's the problem with UKIP, they have Muslim members and are not sufficiently tough on immigration.

Yes, WTF good will this MEP UKIP victory do if Britain turns around and elects a Labour government?

True. I’m of that same generation and we also grew up under the worst of political correctness and completely in the shadow of (and kind of under the thumb of) the Baby Boomers. I’m thinking specifically of the left-wing types for whom it will always be 1968-74. They’re still fighting all the battles from that time period, without realizing things have moved on.

Won't change anything? From the UKIP platform:

• A vote for UKIP is a vote to leave the EU and recover power over our national life.

Do you understand the difference between the UK Parliament which ( for the time being ) actually legislates, and the EU parliament which just talks?
All the REAL power in Brussels is in the bureaucracy .
If they win seats in the REAL parliament in London, then they can accomplish something.

Exactly. Even in the local council seats where UKIP picked seats up, they haven’t picked up any majorities. UKIP is in charge of arguments in Brussels and a few spoiler votes in some local councils. Unless they find a way to overcome the huge deficit they have to the other parties in The Parliament of The UK, they can’t force any EU referendum.
