Colleges Rattled as Obama Seeks Rating System
New York Times ^ | 05/26/2014 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR

WASHINGTON — The college presidents were appalled. Not only had President Obama called for a government rating system for their schools, but now one of his top education officials was actually suggesting it would be as easy as evaluating a kitchen appliance.

“It’s like rating a blender,” Jamienne Studley, a deputy under secretary at the Education Department, said to the college presidents after a meeting in the department’s Washington headquarters in November, according to several who were present. “This is not so hard to get your mind around.”

The rating system is in fact a radical new effort by the federal government to hold America’s 7,000 colleges and universities accountable by injecting the executive branch into the business of helping prospective students weigh collegiate pros and cons. For years that task has been dominated by private companies like Barron’s and U.S. News & World Report.

Mr. Obama and his aides say colleges and universities that receive a total of $150 billion each year in federal loans and grants must prove they are worth it. The problem is acute, they insist: At too many schools, tuition is going up, graduation rates are going down, and students are leaving with enormous debt and little hope of high-paying jobs.

The idea that the government would try to rate the schools has rattled the entire higher education system, from elite private institutions to large state universities to community colleges.

colleges used to be exclusively for the intellectual and financial elite. Now it is for the mediocre. Any rating system that has meaning should be relative to what colleges used to be.

I took some classes in a “popular” city college. They had students who could not do fourth grade math. The instructors were not allowed to flunk the wretched students, so they would give the F students a C, and give the D students a B. Their theory was that these horrible students would never matriculate or get a job, and probably would not even show up the next semester, so what harm could it do?

That college has a great football program...

What if people aren’t willing to pay big bucks for high ratings in diversity and ethnicity?

This is your brain:

This is your brain after four years at a leftist college:

Any entity that takes government funding is subject to the whims of the Government.

at a recent college financing talk, a question was answered regarding student loans.

The Department of Education is now in charge of granting student loans.

Wha!?

Those who set tuition rates, chose and keep instructors and who choose admissions are in charge of lending money.

Appaled?

No one in the room seemed to right then and there go along with their childrens’ wishes to not go to school, nor to listen to their instincts and say no to sending their kids to get brainwashed by the government and then pay them five times as much as they paid their own college and local bank back in the day.

That was what was appalling.

That these colleges will eventually get the same treatment by the government is forseeable, and logical. And if they are appalled, that only verifies the unreasonable and unintelligent but ideological nature of these institutions.

They’ll continue to adore Obama, like abductees in a prison, but to be appalled is just stupid.

Like people who expect loyalty and safe keeping from a mobster they choose to work with.

I propose a quintile rating system. A for the best quintile, B for the second, C, D, F quintile for the worst (skip the letter E)

Only three ratings would be needed:
1) cost of tution for a 4 year degree
2) percentage of graduates after 4 years
3) average starting salary for graduates

An AAA college would have the lowest cost, highest graduation and highest starting salary.

An FFF college would have the highest cost, lowest graduation rate and lowest starting salary.

“Dean, I don’t see any ‘studies’ courses on your curriculum. I also don’t find any Marxist Theory courses, either.”
“Mr. Obama, we are a science, technology, and engineering school. Our students don’t come here for that crap.”
“Sorry, Dean. I have to rate your school ‘F’.”

In PRINCIPLE, this is a great idea. OK, how about:

Debt incurred-—>degree conferred-—>% of people who graduate from school with that degree..% of people who work in that field from this school with that degree....avg/median # of years to pay it back?

What it will mutate into by the time Dems get done with it, is percentage of lesbian trans-sexual Islamic professors divided by cranky old middle-aged white professors, times the # of Womyns’ Black Studies classes.

There is a certain ridiculousness to such a proposal which defies reason and borders on insanity.

Let's get this straight:

- a federal government, its multitudinous heads, with their bureaucracies, and political ideologues in academia, funded by "progressive" billionaires and their minions, who have so destroyed the elementary, middle, and high school educational experience that freshmen college students must receive remedial English before they can enter college curriculum studies--this motley crew is going to "rate" America's colleges?
Question: if the federal government cannot administer a Veterans' health care program, why would anyone believe it is capable of making judgment on the Administrations of America's colleges and universities?

Probably to get an “A” rating at least one-fourth of the student body must be LGBT, one-fourth Muslim, one-fourth black and the rest a mixture of whites and other minorities. 51% of the student body must vote liberal and 95% of the faculty must be liberal.

This is part of an ongoing effort to wipe out trade schools.

Lefty institutions handing out toilet paper degrees in Social Justice and Women’s Studies will have no problems.
