Could the California shooting revive gun control?

No one was surprised that there was a mass shooting the other day in California. After all, this is the United States of America, the mass-shooting capital of the world. In response, a few members of Congress are hoping to revive the gun control debate. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said on “Face the Nation” that he wants to push some kind of updated version of the Manchin-Toomey bill that would expand background checks, among other things. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.),

I’m sure there are enough stupid people out there in the nation that you could get a couple to hold signs, sure. I’m sure the earwax-eating members of Congress could get right behind that kind of winning agenda.

Aside from a few wannabee dictators in the media and government salivating at the thought of a disarmed public, gun control is about as popular with most people as urine-flavored lollipops.

Seriously, cars are three times as deadly as guns, if you’re genuinely concerned about public health deal with the goddamned traffic first, then go after medical malpractice and call me when you solve those issues. Speaking of which, if it wasn’t for knives and a BMW the jilted bacha bazi from Santa Barbara wouldn’t have managed to kill the majority of his victims, so given that it’s a possibility that by toting around a gun may he have actually reduced his lethality.

An ***hole in a BMW is faaaar more dangerous than your average gunowner. Ban BMWs, it’s for the children.

About the only further restriction that can be placed on gun sales is placing those who have diagnosed mental issues of a social-disconnect nature, specifically Aspergers, on a gun purchase no-fly list until they attain a certain age, for instance, 45. Yes it’s a violation of rights and therein lies a conflict, but there are other categories of people who are precluded from owning weapons so it’s not setting a precident.

We need to address the causal agent of the problem, not the fallout of the problem that, in this case, parents and therapists were well aware of but who’s choices were arbitrary and ultimately, wrong. Let’s put some channels in place enabling a judge to be sucked into crisis situations right away if there’s an out of control pre- or post-teen and let’s nip mental illness in the bud before the worst case scenario happens.

Why would it revive calls for gun control when most of the victims were stabbed to death or run over with an automobile? Shouldn’t we have demands for knife control or auto control since these were far more deadly than the guns?

Oh, yeah, right. We’re dealing with “Progressives”: emotionally driven, mostly fact-free, and certainly logic-free individuals. Folks who decry “climate change”, something that’s occurred unstoppably for almost a billion years on the planet. Folks decrying “global warming” when there’s been NO warming for nearly 20 years now, and with carbon levels HIGHER than the warmer Medieval Warming period. And let’s not forget “fracking”, a process that’s been in continuous use since 1943 and involves injection of WATER and SAND several thousand feet below the water table with food-grade “chemicals” like citric acid and cellulose, and which have not produced a single documented case of contaminating surface ground water.

Yes, to a “Progressive”, calling for more gun-control after several people were stabbed to death by a madman makes perfect sense.

It’s California we already have gun control here..only the gang bangers have the guns..meanwhile when is someone going to bring up knife control after all the whacko did kill three people with a knife..oh yeah almost forgot..those there men won’t be mentioned because they were killed with a weapon the media knows can never be banned..All day all I see on the local news is “shooting rampage” he killed three people with a knife!! He killed three people with a gun..yes that is true, but that occurs on a daily basis in Chicago and no one says a peep because they are killed by gang bangers and no one is going to demand they give up their guns

Why can’t we achieve more knife control, as well limit access to BMW’s?

For that matter, shouldn’t there be more control over hands and feet, which are overwhelming used in disproportionate numbers, comparitively, to guns?

The father of one of the teenagers shot in this rampage made a very emotional appeal for Congress to act on gun control legislation and specifically mentioned their failure to act after the Newton Ct. shootings.

Yeah, I guess the three people he stabbed with an assault knife don't count.

...specifically Asperger's...

He wasn't diagnosed with Asperger's either.

Most (if not all) of the Asperger's diagnoses in these situations have been done post-mortem. That is not a valid method of diagnosis.

I doubt that anything will come of the Isla Vista shootings. It’s the wrong narrative. This isn’t a case of a crazy, bigoted, homophobic, racist, sexist, right-wing extremist slaughtering anime-eyed, minority children. The shooter is the spoiled, mixed race son of a Hollywood producer/director. On the surface, Elliot Rodger and his family are everything the Leftist elites in this country treasure. He’s one of them; one of their children. He’s not the correct boogeyman for this story.

Well, the Newtown guy was autistic, but the Virginia Tech guy and this one are being called Autistic after the fact.

I would be very hesitant to get carried away calling for a broadening of limitations on 2nd amendment rights. Most all of us have issues at some point. Today, seize the guns from people with Asperger's: Tomorrow, maybe it's your guns being taken.

the article I read said he had been diagnosed as Aspergers. Was the attorney wrong?

found it:
www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27562917

“Earlier, Peter Rodger’s lawyer, Alan Shifman, said.... Mr Rodger’s son had been “diagnosed at an earlier age of being a highly functional Asperger Syndrome child”, had trouble making friends and had been receiving professional help.”

Oops, sorry, didn't know that. I'm still really, really uncomfortable with a witch hunt against autistic people.

I suppose the take away from all of this would be: If you think you have Asperger's, don't tell anyone.

I understand your point completely and do acknowledge the conflict, but I’m not sure what other solution to offer.

The father of the psycho teenager is one of the main reasons for the shooting.

Pointing the finger elsewhere is a liberal trait because they hold no capability for self responsibility.

So, no, this massacre isn’t going to change the prospects for national legislation on guns. Nor will the next one, or the one after that, or the steady accumulation of thousands of gun deaths, or the dozens of kids who are killed in accidental shootings every year.********

Well, maybe it’s because nearly 300 million non-uniformed combatants were killed by governments (mostly their own) in the 20th century. Far and away more than those killed in combat. Governments mass murdered four times more people in the 20th century through genocide, politicide and mass murder than through war. And the earlier centuries weren’t any better relatively speaking.

Government is easily the biggest murderer in human history and the reason we have a 2nd Amend.
